hello all, could someone give me some advice please, i want to bring my guinea pigs indoors but don’t know what house to buy, i have two very scared guinea pigs and need to bring them in to handle them more, what do you put on the bottom of the house/cage to make it easy for cleaning. how big.

I'd recommend a house with 2 exits.

As for what to put under them.. Maybe a old wee blanket untill they become more relaxed

Hello! I think you’re right bringing them inside. I’m sure they will become much more tame when they see you more often. they’ll be warmer too. Look at c&c cages. You can build them all sorts of shapes and sizes. You can by the grids and Correx separately - but there are companies that send you everything you need (which is what I opted for). If you google c&c cages for guinea pigs you’ll see loads of stuff. I used C&C Guinea Pig Cages - Home - c and c guinea pig cages but there’s lots of places. My pigs are in a 4x2 which I think is about the minimum recommended for 2 pigs. They tend to be cheaper than standard cages I think - but provide more space also.

C&cguineapigcages.co.uk are very helpful for c&c cages, which most people use for indoor pigs.

thank you for that link, i think that would be better than leaving them outside, they have a big cage next to the kitchen but i just can’t get them out, they are so scared. poor little things.

I adopted mine from a rescue and so they had been handled at the sanctuary prior to coming to me. But despite that, one of them was still very timid. I really think having the open top cage in my main living area helped loads. I’m always talking to them - and they’re always shouting at me! The timid one will always be cautious and shy - but she’s so much better than she was - and gets up at the side of the cage as soon as she thinks there might be food!

love your piggie, lovely set up. i notice you have a fleece on the bottom do they pee on that, also how often do you need to wash it.

Hi, yes I use fleece. I watched youtube videos by “squeak dreams” - a lady who has lots of videos on there. I stole a few of her hints and it worked for me. I put towels down for the absorbent layer and then fleece on top. You need to wash the fleece 3 times without fabric condition so that it wicks moisture down to the “absorbent layer”. It then keeps the piggies feet dry.

Yes they wee in it, but I use pee-pads on top of the fleece - under hidies and in corners they tend to wee and poo. I change them out every 1-2 days and sweep the whole cage out daily.

I also use an under bed storage box with a hole cut out as a “hay room”. Because they eat in there (and often sleep in there too) - they do most of their wee and poo in there. I top the hay up in the morning and change it all for fresh in the evening. I line the box with newspapers so it’s easy just to fold up the newspaper and hay and put it in the bin. Quick pet friendly squirt and wipe. New paper and hay - and bingo.

It sounds a lot but I’ve got a routine and it takes like 10 minutes. I have a fleece canopy over their “hay room” so they feel secure in there. I also have a pad at the “door” of the room - so the over spilled hay can be picked up and swept back into the box easily. I don’t get much hay in the rest of the cage.

I do a full cage clean about every 1-2 weeks because the daily clean usually keeps the smells down. I use a pet laundry bag to wash their stuff so no bits get stuck in my washer.

I do have a routine - but it’s for my sanity as well as theirs! Ain’t no pongy piggies sharing my living room :))

A waterproof tablecloth is good for putting down under your c&c cage if you don’t have a correx base. You can then place newspaper or puppy pads then your fleeces on the top x

I must add that you only have to wash 3 times when the fleece is new - not every tine you wash it.
where did you buy your fleece, i use to make my own for my hedgehog so could i use the same material.

Rita I've literally just been into b and m and they do 2 fleeced 150xsomething! In a set for £4.99. Really lovely quality as well. 😁
