I can't really type much as I'm writing this on my phone! But.. I got my 2 boys last night & they have lived together for 1 year with their previous family! But tonight they started chattering really loud at each other and started agressivly chasing each other round the cage :( every time they go near each other they chatter really loud at each other! I've never owned guinea pigs before so they're really scaring me :(

Anyone got any advice if they continue to fight? x

eeek sorry! by posting on my mobile! i have posted this in the wrong section :(

new smells and new surroundings can start off dominance issues, is there any way you can put a barrier up in their cage even if it's just for now?

if it carries on or gets any worse your going to have to separate them and try to reintroduce

I agree with Rawr, changes can spark off a reaction. They are exhibiting dominant behaviour towards one another, chattering & chasing is perfectly normal as long as there's no actual physical contact.

It does look & sound much worse than it is but it can also escalate & quickly. To put a mesh barrier between them overnight is a good idea then tomorrow get them out in a neutral area & see how they go - this could well be just a blip & they'll be fine :)

Help please

hi i also need some help with my 2 boars. I have had them for 6 months and they previously lived in a hutch outside. Due to the cold weather i have moved them inside but they have started fighting very badly. One of my guinea pigs has lots of scabs on his skin and yesterday i left them for around 5 minuets and when i returned there was alot of blood on the fleece. Should i seperate them? They always got on fine when in their hutch and had no more than a few grumbles at each other. I'm just confused because the vet told me they are happier and healthier and will live longer when kept with a fellow guinea pig but i also dont want one of them being picked on which is happening at the moment. Thanks

I would definately separate them!
If blood is drawn SEPARATE!

I've had to seperate my boys who'd been together for around 2/3 months as they've had several fight and drew blood each time it got to a point where I thought It's not going to work.
Their hutch was a double one large enough for about 3/4 piggies but luckily it has a seperator where the stairs are so they can still hear each other and talk to each other.
During the day they go in to a big flat one storey c&c cage that's seperated so both boys can see, hear, smell & talk to each other aswell as my girls.
It was the best solution for me, my brother had the same problem his boars have happily lived together for 10 months with no changes and all of a sudden in september they had a massive fight and pepsi attacked Rolo and he turn round and really hurt pepsi (he needed vet treatment).
I hope you can sort it xx

The indoor cage that i have is the Rabbit 100 two tier from pets at home, however their hutch is much larger. The only time they fight is in the indoor cage. I dont wish to seperate them as the majority of the time they do get along fine and play together it was the one incident which drew blood that concerns me. Would seperating them and just allowing them to play on the floor together help and slowly introducing them again? thanks :)

A 100cm cage is not big enough really for two guinea pigs - let alone boars.
Floor space usually goes well (from my experience) as neither has a territory and there is plenty to explore around them so it sets their minds on different things too

BTW have you had your guinea pig covered in scabs checked over at a vets? it could be mange or fungal problem

Do you think i should buy the 140 cage? i was thinking about doing this just not sure if I'm going to be seperating them. I took george to the vets the day after the incident and he said they should be fine as they were not to deep. I allow my guinea pigs the run of the kitchen and dining room for the majority of the day when someone is in to watch them. Thanks for your help

well a 100cm cage is really more for a single guinea pig. 140cm would be plenty big enough. I have two sets of males in two 120cm cages and they have the space. I would like bigger but I havent the space in the house. Wouldn't be necessary if you separated them I suppose, though one would have a mighty big cage.
You could gradually try and introduce them again slowly even though on most occassions that is usually it when blood is drawn.

thanks so much for your help. I have decided to buy another cage the same as the one i have now but place them next to each other so they can still speak and let them have their floor time together.
