Hello, nice to meet you! I'll try to give you some answers to the best of my knowlegde!

1. What illnesses are guinea pigs prone to? Piggies can get a respiratory infection very easily, from allerigies, or just a cool draft. My piggies have never had one..so its not THAT commong - like 'happens-every-day' sorta thing but it happens. The signs of a RI are easy to see most of the time. Those are: drainage from the eyes or nose, and a clicking noise when they breathe. The vet can give you antibiotics for this. Also piggies tend to have some problems with their urinary tract. Stones, infections, etc. signs of this are blood in their waste, and vocalizing when urinating.

2. What is the best food for guinea pigs? They need pellets (from the pet stores- for guinea pigs only), timothy hay is a must it aids in digestion and not to mention they love it, and fruits/veggies daily or every 2 days or so. Not too many though. my piggies favorites are a slice of an apple, or a baby carrot, or 2 seedless green grapes, or even a slice of kiwi. all piggie's taste buds are different.

3. Do they need injections? Not regular's like dogs and cats do, however if your piggie get's a parasite or fungus on or under the skin, injections are needed. Also, piggies are hard to give oral medication to, so any other kind of antibiotics your piggie might need for illnesses are usually given thru injections.

4. Where is the best place to keep guinea pigs (winter, summer)? I keep my piggies inside all year round. A lot of cavy savy's build hutches for their piggies so that they can be outside and in a cage at the same time. Piggies cant be in the direct sunlight for long periods of time, they CAN develop heat stroke which is serious.

5. Whats the minimum size for a hutch (as i would make it double this size)? it depends on how many piggies you have. you have to make sure they have enough room for water bottle, food bowls, someplace for them to hide (a tube, wooden house, etc.), and ample room for playing, scurrying, and "pop-corning" around.

6. What can you do about mites? Mites is easily treated with usually 3 injections of invomec, one every 10 or so days. each shot costs approx. 12$

7. How can you convince my Dad to let me have a pair of piggies? My dad dislikes animals. He would never let me have a puppy or a cat or ANYTHING. However, he loves one kind of animal... GP's. Believe it or not! My family has raised guinea's since i was very young, and my dad loves them. Their so cute! How could he resist!? They're pretty low maintenance. Cage cleaning about once a week. Food everyday, and of course plenty of cuddle time.

8. Are guinea pigs crazy? no way! they're soo adorable. each one has their own personality! They have such a sense of humor is cute!

9. What size should a run be? However big you want to make it. Make sure if your run is built on grass that the grass has not been blemished my dog/cat feces. That can give your piggie e.coli.

10. what do they like the best, vegetable wise? Different piggies have different tastes. you just have to try differnt things. Most piggies like carrots & grapes.. but each one likes other things also.

11. Whats the best bedding? NO CEDAR SHAVINGS! this is very harmful to the piggie. they are allergic to it and they could develop a respiratory problem. I use "softsorb" which is pretty much just balls of paper. You can buy it at your local pet store. its not expensive and its flushable.

..and we dont mind at all! You're inquisitive..

if you need anything else you can check my profile - my sn's are on there, feel free to I'm or email! Or visit my website if you'd like! It's just been started up so it's not fully rolling yet, but feel free!

thanks so much for that

I have more questions

1. Do piggies like to be cuddled and/or tickled?

2. If they live indoors can you take them outside for a run?

3. What can a hutch be made out of?

4. What material would you need on a roof of a hutch (if it rains)? (WHEN it rains)

5. Would you need a slanted roof? (so the rain doesnt collect up on the roof and leak through)

6. What are the basic things you need in a hutch/cage?

7. Do they thrive from attention

8. On school days i would only be able to spend an hour with the piggies, is this ok? (on weekends all day and on school holiday nearly all day, much more than an hour!)

9. My Dad said no we have too many animals (2 chinchillas and a cat... :tickedoff: ) I need more reasons to get a guinea pig!

Thanks and i'm sorry again for these questions
By the way i was joking about the crazy question
no.8 last set of questions

Hey... ill try to answer some of your questions :)

1. Piggies love lots of attention and love being cuddled...

2. My 2 pigs live inside and when it is sunny they go out and run around on the lawn...

3. I have a metal hutch, a wooden hutch and a plastic travel cage... so any of those three I guess...

4. I have a Tarp on top of my rabbit hutch to keep the rain out...

5. You would necissarily need a tilted roof...

6. Food bowls, water bottle, bedding and a night house and some things for them to hide under like a tunnel.

7. I would say yes... they lovelots of love and attention :)

8. Yes that is fine!

I have just talked my mum into letting me adopt a bunny :) I now how you feel I have 2guineas, 2 rabbits and a dog and mum says thats enough ;D

I have attached some pics of my set up to give you an idea. I have a two storey hutch indoors for 2 guinea pigs, one is still a baby :smitten:
It is a large hutch but I let Lennie roam free round the sitting room when I am indoors, he loves it. I have a cut out cardboard box near the hutch with lots of hay in. I also use aubiose in the hutch on top of lots of newspaper with loads of hay on top of that. Piggies need plenty of hay as they eat it, sleep in it and play in it! They have a varied selection of fresh veg every day with fruit as an occasional treat. I am new to piggy owning and have learnt a lot on this forum!

Also can you have a hutch indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer if i gradually take them outside so the can adjust to the differences in temperature

I'll think of more later :D

Hi i've always had our boys indoors, 5 star accommodation is what the family say ::), we live in a suburb where's there's still foxes so there's no way i'd put a piggie or any other little one outside in those conditions. I do worry about our new little addition down below us he's about 12 weeeks old puppy i'm sure a fox would love him :'( :'( >:( >:( And no the so called parents do not bring him inside at night :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: this is what i'd like to do :(

They are as nice as piggies! Downside- Nocturnal....

IF i am every allowed a pair of piggies i will make them an inside hutch although that will mean that i will have to get rid of my tv... Oh well

Also they would go outside for a run and i would use Niki's indoor hutch idea, as it only cost her OH 1 day to make and only cost £40 to make, my Dad is a carpenter so he will help, he made the table in our living room

Rachx

::) Sorry but we'll have to agree to disagree there Rach, though I've never owned a Chin so could be wrong but I don't think so LOL! No time for TV with piggies anyway, sounds like you have the ideal home for them. Lucky you having a carpenter for a dad 88)

Actually i dont have to get rid of the tv, now its so high up i cant watch it but if i ever do its there, i may have to sell my dvd player though...
