My mum recently moved house so when I was visiting her I noticed what seemed like an empty hutch. This hutch had green water inside the water bottle. There was no hay. My mum has just told me that she saw a white guinea pig inside it today so I have called SSPCA. Hoping that this gets sorted out. I am worried.

It is pretty cold and wet out here just now.

Awww that's horrible! How anybody could neglect any animal that way is just beyond me :(

Hopefully the poor little thing finds a home where it will be looked after.

Oh no - is it a piggie that has been left behind by previous owners in your mum's new garden? If so could your mum remove it to a safer place?

x

have you given hi/her clean water and food? most likely it will be starving so that is most important right now. keep us updated!

It really bothers me that a little piggy is living outdoors with no attention etc. It's so cold out there :(
My lot live in our lounge and wouldn't have it any other way :)
Maybe your Mum could speak to the neighbours and carefully approach about the little one, could be an ice breaker as well as saving him/her.
Most people may think of you as interfering and take offence but she could mention that you have piggies and could help rehome etc. if they don't want it...
So sad but needs to be approached with caution.

The piggy is in a garden just up from mums.
I'll happily take the pig in until another home can be found if that is needed. I'm not able to give anything because I don't live there. People live in the house and I don't want to be caught going into the garden :(

Thank you for the advice everyone x

Well done for reporting it, hopefully the 'owners' have surrendered the pig and it can find a loving home. My guinea pigs wheek so loudly for their daily veggies, so how anyone could ignore the wheeks of a starving pig is beyond me :rant:

Mum has told me that there is now some hay in the hutch. She didn't sound impressed. Not sure if this means someone has been over to investigate.

The SSPCA have told me that I can call them to see what is going on so I will later on tonight. (I don't like waiting.) If nothing has been done I will visit tomorrow since it is just a 15 minute walk from here x

Let us know if you need any help... we have a small hospital cage here if you need it.. xx

You shouldn't mind being caught, they're in the wrong. Just go into their garden and give him some veg and water. It's dark now anyway so you should bring a torch. I'm sure they won't notice :)

You could get done for trespassing. Could you not let the dust settle a bit if nothing is being done and go and knock just saying that you are interested in getting a piggy and do they know any local pet shops or breeders. They may offer to give you theirs.

I'm not going to go in - there's lots of houses very close that look onto the garden and I don't want to break the law! Will be visiting mum tomorrow anyway so I will check in.

Ohh the poor piggie. I hope something is done. Sure they have given it some hay now but as everyone here knows hay is not enough and if they've only just tossed a bit of hay in now to appease the SSPCA we know that they may eventually get bored/forgetful and in no time he/she won't be getting any again. :(

Keep us updated please x

I visited today. Didn't see the pig but the water bottle has been replaced and there is some hay.

Yes. I just called and was told that I have to wait 7-10 days to be told the outcome!

Oh! 7 to 10 days thats random. I guess they might go round initially and tell them they have been told about a possible neglected animal and say they will be back to see if it gets better? At least that is what i have seen on the tv shows about animals... Hopefully they will make sure the piggie is ok. It must be too cold to him outside though :(

Oh I absolutely would not enter someone elses property - not only is it trespass, but you could put yourself in a dangerous situation if the people who live there become agressive. I'm a very placid person who hates confrontation but I would be pretty angry and shouty if I found a stranger in my garden!

Even the RSPCA are not allowed to enter someone's property without permission, unless they have a police officer with them!

Lets hope the piggie is happier now :) You did a good thing :)

I once called a horse welfare charity about a really really strange "riding school" in Norfolk where all the horses were in a very sorry state and the owner was clearly very odd. I worried afterwards that the owner would track me down somehow and come after me, but nothing happened. In this case the RSPCA told me it was a case of ignorance, not deliberate neglect. But I dont think it takes much to realise that any animal needs a safe habitat/hutch/stable and water/clean bedding and appropriate food.

Hi everyone. I contacted SSPCA today and they will not give me any info. I have to wait on the inspector contacting me :hmm:
