Hi there- I'm trying to find out what temperature is to warm for my girls to live in. Just moved Friday an unlike our last place we do not have central air so the temp fluctuates. We have had a few warm days here and the apartment has been around 75° - 77° F. Is this to warm? I did put on the ceiling fan in there room and made sure they had more then enough water but I'm still worried. Were still in spring and being the midwest, tomorrow could be 40°f out so I didnt want to turn on the window air conditioner that will be used during the summer but, I will if these temps are unsafe. Any information would be a big help!

Thanks,
Stina, Stormy, Chewy, Evy and Chloe

hi there. guinea pigs are comfortable in temps 65-75 degrees f. i feel like your pigs wiill be ok, but i wouldnt go much higher than that. you could try to keep there area cool, with the fans etc, but at the same time you dont want a bad draft on them bc it could make them susceptible to URIs (I'm pretty sure, somebody plz correct me if I'm wrong!). ive read you can put a brick or another cool surface in the area with them, to give them something to be near if they feel to hot. (ive also seen something in petsmart called the "chinchiller," obviously for chinchillas, but it's basically a smooth rock to encourage the animal to lie on which will keep it cool). hth :)

When it gets hot here we bring out the frozen guinea pig!. Freeze a bottle of water, then wrap it in an old sock and pop it in the cage. If its really hot they will lie next to it, then as it melts it will cool the cage down.
Make sure you wrap the bottle though as otherwise it can be too cold on piggies skin. This is a lot cheaper than any of the fancy packs you can buy but does the same job.

This is what I do for my piggies and rabbits. If you feel it's even a bit too warm it's probably best to make one up, they can always move away from it if they get too hot.

The problem with fans is they just blast the hot air around, if you wanted to use a fan you could put ice cubes behind it so that it is sending cooler air around but I would be worried about draughts and the fact they couldn't get away if it got a bit chilly.

For my chinchillas I've started putting an ice pack on top of the cage so it doesn't get chewed and it cools the whole air in the cage :)
