Hello, I just got my fur babies on Friday and have been doing my best to care for them. My concern is the conflicting information on what to feed them veggie wise and how often. At the time I got them I didn't know much about what to get them so I got romaine, baby spinach, carrots and cantaloupe. I didn't find out until today that spinach and cantaloupe weren't supposed to be given everyday. Are they going to get sick? I have been giving the spinach and cantaloupe twice a day. It's really all I have except the lettuce until the first of the month. What should I do?

firstly , :wel: to the forum !

Are you happy to add your location to your profile ? We have members from all over the world and it is really helpful to know whether you are based in the UK/US – or elsewhere. Having an idea of your Country + location can sometimes help us tailor our advice .

Here is a link to help you do this …

Secondly, your guinea pigs will not die - but it is not ideal to give Spinach and Cantaloup daily .

This is a good thread ...

Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

As you can see, this thread lists the vegetables that can be given daily ...

1 slice of bell or sweet pepper/capsicum of any colour; 1 slice of cucumber; 1-2 chunks of celery; 1 French bean; 1 sprig of coriander/cilantro; 1 one inch strip of spring greens

..as well as advice on other vegetables which are safe to give.

I advise you to introduce new vegetable gradually. bell peppers are a good veg to start with as they are rich in vitamin C .

Great advice from Lisa above.

They are not going to get poorly from what you have fed them, some foods are better than others for piggies and there is lots of conflicting information

Have a read of this - Edible And Forbidden Veg And Fruit List With Vitamin C Grading

It helped us no end when we started with piggies

Aim for 1 cup of mixed veg split into breakfast and tea. Unlimited hay at all times and a small bowl of pellets morning and night.

Diet should be 80-85% good quality hay, 10-15% veg, 5% pellets

We feed typically

Morning: Cucumber, Celery, Red/green/yellow pepper (deseeded)

Tea: Cucumber, Lettuce or Coriander alternative days and occasionally substitute this with Parsley or Cabbage of some sort, and add carrot, broccoli, spinach occasionally

We will feed melon, tomato, grape as a treat every few weeks

Hope that helps
