We have a lovely boar at the rescue (Windwhistle Warren) called Chocolate. He's a gorgeous fluffy abby who came in a month or so ago. He's fairly quiet and we've recently noticed that he appears to have scrunched up toes, which potentially could indicate some sort of neurological problem. He is going to the vets next week but I wanted to post on here to see if anyone had come across this before?

Here's a pic of his curled over feet - hope you can see what I mean - not normal for a pig. He can straighten them but they just go back to being curled. He's not in any pain;

Anyone encountered anything like this before? We were wondering if he had been dropped and suffered some sort of spinal injury? He walks ok.

and here's the handsome man himself;

Are they curled up like that when he's walking about or just when he's held?

Ooooo he is gorgeous!

My Aby/Peruvian does seem to tense her toes when I get her out for nail clipping, then suddenly relaxes them! I don't know if yours only does it when he is handled, or is he doing it all the time? Can he walk okay?

No they seem ok when he's walking about. He does it when he's being held... just doesn't seem normal to me, never seen it before and i've seen alot of pigs ;-)

Can piggies be arthritic? My Mum has arthritis, and although she can still straighten her hands, when she's using them, if she is just siting with them relaxed in her lap then they curl, it just seems to be the position they naturally want to assume. Sorry to answer your question with a question, but I have no other experience or advice.

Interesting question and I don't know either but it's interested to know that about your mum as it could be the case. Will let you know what the vet says! x

Yes pigs can have arthritis but no clue whether this is what's causing him to curl his toes. Good Luck at the vets :)

I have the odd pig who curls their toes when they are picked up, but it certainly isnt normal to do this when walking, how odd. Please let us know what your vet says, i'd be interested to see what they think.
