i rescued Barney and jasper a few weeks ago and everything is fine but the last few days they've been squabbling. jasper teethchatters and chases barney round and then mounts him and gets his 'man juice' over his back. there's no blood drawn or anything, but barney does squeak alot when jasper approaches. i think they're between 18 month / 2 years old and really just wanted to ask if i should neuter both or just jasper?

Unless you intend to pair a male up with a female there is very little point in neutering guinea pigs. All that neutering does is stop the production of sperm, not all the other juices that go along with it nor the aggression levels - if pigs don't like each other chopping the doodads off won't change that.

Most boar pairings will have a bit of rude behaviour now and then - this time of year is particularly potent, most will settle again, so as long as they don't fight and fall out there's no need to get too concerned. I usually give my rude boys a teddy to take their frustrations out on. It doesn't run away or protest so very useful if they will use (or abuse) one.

Unlike some other animals, neutering does not actually affect the behaviour of a guinea pig. It would not stop your boys from squabbling, and the operation can have many possible complications, such as abcesses, infections etc. The care needed post-operation is long and extensive, and I personally would not recommend neutering your piggies unless you intend to pair them with females.

thanks guys, i will leave them be. they've been together this long and been through a lot together so will try a teddy for jasper to have his fun with instead ;)

Neutering won't change boar behaviour and, as mentioned above, is only really done to boars who are paired with sows.

Male guinea pigs produce testosterone in both their testes and their grease glands so neutering will not alter aggressive behaviour.

How old are your boars? They may well be entering the hormonal phase of their development. See Wiebke's sticky on boar dominance displays.
