In the next couple of days I am rehoming a 5 year old boar who I saw advertised free in a local paper. Would it be sensible to have have him neutered so he can live with my 2 girls,or leave him as he is? Just concerned with his age.

Unless you have got access to VERY good vet, I would recommend not to neuter and to just have him as a neighbour with the interaction and stimulation through the bars because of his advanced age.

I also would not recommend neutering unless you have a very good guinea vet as it is a very tricky op. Having said that, boars I have had with interaction through bars tend just to chew bars and rumble up and down the interaction panel while the females don't pay him much attention. I had my boar neutered at about a year and a half and the op and aftercare were straightforward and well supported by my vet practice. Since then he has lived with two females and has settled to live with them very well. I have read that boars will still behave in a sexual manner towards females (even after neutering) but after a while living with them they 'lose interest' and become more of a friends group. However, my boars who are single but see other piggies through the bars tend to keep the sexual interest and it seems to wind them up more than anything.

Single boars will try more to impress the ladies with their prowess, but it is also giving them the stimulation they so urgently crave.

My older neutered boars certainly prefer to lavish their attention more to their food than their wives (except for the crucial hours), but they still like to flirt across the fence and like to wind each other up through the bars from time to time, but they do appreciate kisses from the girls and they are still on hand of one of the wives is feeling hormonal... :)

A five year old guinea pig is an elderly guinea pig and therefore at an increased risk when it comes to operations and recovery, so any unnecessary op should be considered very carefully.
