Hi,
I neutered my guineapig boar 8 days ago.. hes seems to be doing very well (thank god) and has started even darting around and running around his cage in evening like before.. hes eating and pooing ok..
hes currently still on towels..
i use woodshavings pet bedding..
How soon can he go back to being on his old bedding and not towels?

(Please no advice about changing the woodshavings and switching to fleece or whatever.. all my piggie are on it and are doing very well)

Thank u..

I would say once the stitches are out and the wound has healed over.

Do you mean woodshavings or sawdust?, I use wood shavings too

Yes woodshavings.. sorry didnt know the correct term.. lool

I'm like you and used to use woodshavings, I changed to snowflake which is dust extracted wood chippings, a lot more absorbent than shavings, a lot softer underfoot and they lock the smell in a lot better making the hutch smell fresher. Plus they don't cost much more than shavings. ;)

the wound should be fully knitted between 10-14 days; I would recommend to wait another 2 days until you put him back on shavings. On fleece, he can go back to his normal cage earlier.

I had my boar Dexter neutered earlier this year. I kept him on towels and puppy pads for 3 weeks just to make sure the area had healed fully, then changed him back over to woodshavings.
He is now loving life with his new wife.

Every type of bedding has its drawbacks and dangers.
Fleece: what chemicals are you washing it in - think vinegar make sure it is rinsed and dry.
Wood pellets: some contain harmful additives - Be very careful to verify
Shavings: Some contain irritating/ non-absorbent oils and "fine dust", sharp inclusions - Ceder especially bad
Corn cob - particular GPs bloating deaths
Paper - some GPs eat this too, I have only used the non-colored.

Observation is critical: any one GP can invent a way to get itself in trouble while the rest do fine.
Pet stores sell some really questionable products, that maybe ok for rabbits but are very iffy for GPs!
