Percy was neutered on Weds. I put him in a smaller cage with towels when I brought him home and have been changing them twice a day. He has been fine since coming home, his incisions are clean and dry and he's eating and drinking normally. Due to space issues in my utility room where the guinea pigs live, I would like to get him back into his normal cage on shavings and hay asap. How long should I keep him on towels for?

You should be able to put him back on his normal bedding. Keep checking him daily for the first two weeks and then every two days during the first month. This is the main time when swellings in the groin area happen, whether there are oedemas, abscesses or hernias.

After that you go back to your weekly check. Abscess in the groin area can in rare cases happen up to 6 months post-op and hernias can still happen over a year later as my Nosgan is proving (he came here already neutered). Regular checks mean that you can notice things early on.

Have you read the Percy Jackson series he turns into a guinea pig so seeing a guinea pig named Percy is suspicious

Am I missing something here?

How is Percy now ?
He's doing well, he's back in his own cage now. His incisions are still looking good. Hopefully in a few weeks he'll meet his new girlfriend Marigold (she's the little one in my profile picture)

Awww. I remember how long the 6 weeks post op seemed when I had mr Carmel neutered. Hope all goes well with lovely Marigold when the time comes.

4 weeks to go until I can let them meet. To prepare myself I have some questions. I have bonded lots of pairs in the past, sows and boars but never one of each. I have a run with a divider which I can use in my utility room where the gpigs live. How long should I let them live side by side with the divider and I'm assuming I can do this before the 6 weeks is up? I have another boar who lives separately, will the smell of him upset either Percy or Marigold when I bond them? Once they are used to each other in the run I will be moving them back into Percy's cage which obviously I will thoroughly clean beforehand. What is the best thing to clean it with?

Percy and Marigold are now living happily together. The bonding went very well, Percy was a little boisterous and over excited but Marigold stood her ground and told him off when necessary. He seems to have accepted his place now! A couple of days ago I saw Marigold running round the cage at full speed and Percy popcorning in the middle, I have never seen him popcorn before. Also Marigold is becoming quite brave and coming out to take food from my hand at tea time and Percy is following, something else he has never done, he always hid away until I had left the room. I am so happy it has worked out for them, all the stress and worry of having him neutered and wondering if it would work was worthwhile.
