I'm considering getting my boar pickle neutered, as he's fell out with most of his boar mates in the past, and getting him a wife pig! I was just wondering, what are other people's experiences getting piggies neutered? How did the op go, and where did you have it done? Getting to Simon maddock seems like a long shot for me, but it's definitely something I'll consider. Here's a pic of the boy, looking a bit.. worried haha.

I had my boar neutered by simon, went perfect👍. No after care was needed, my boar ate straight away after the sleepiness worn off. Its all about getting the best vets to do it. Def worth the drive from nottingham, you could drop your boy in the morning at 9:00 with simon and pick him up again at 4:30. If things go well. Which they will👍

How far is the drive if you don't mind me asking? If it was anytime soon I'd have to get a lift and with work that might be tricky! Thanks for your response though, glad things went well for your boy!

1hr 15. Lets say in the morning about 1hr 45 for you. Take some slices of cucumber in a cool bag( good hydration) with you and plenty of hay in the carrier.

April will be tricky to get an appointment soon, simon has a 2 week holiday i think

The guinea pig vet in Matlock may be closer to you than Simon or have a look at the vet locator above. My vets in Leicester are skilled and competent to carry it out and we also have a specialist vet north Leicester who is experienced as well. Takes me about an hour to drive to Simon and around 30 mins or so to Nottingham so I think you may be looking at over an hour each way

Here at TEAS, we neuter all males, before rehoming. Simon does all our neutering and I wouldn't use anyone else. All recover immediately and we have never had any issues. After watching The Yorkshire Vet on TV last week, carrying out a castrate, when the intestines came out (which he said wasn't unusual - Simon was horrified when I told him and said it should never happen) I would never trust anyone but Simon, to neuter my piggies.

And he was on t.v doing this🤔. How bad is that!

Then you see the owner putting the males together and starting to add the girls. Plan was to put 6 girls with two males. No mention of 6 week wait or the fact that it’s unlikeky to work with two males and six females.

:yikes::yikes::yikes:

I had Squeaks neutered by my usual vet with no problems. I made sure to ask about her experience and record first. She has her own rabbits so I thought she would be good with other small furries too.

Wow.. that sounds pretty horrific! Poor piggies. Might have to watch that so that I can complain about it afterwards haha. Really makes you wonder! Thanks for your advice, I'm thinking about not doing the op now honestly just as I'm not sure if I want to put him through the risk unless I'm 100%. Dating might be our safest option!

I hate to post my negative experience but I feel like you should know the risk of getting your boar neutered. I got my first piggy, Nickel, neutered so he could live with my girl, Penny. The surgery went fine. However, he ended up passing away from post-op neutering complications. I know other piggies have made it out okay, and that's actually the reason I went through with the surgery. I wish I never did, but I can't turn back time.
My advice is to talk with your exotic vet about it and think of other options besides neutering. There's always a plan B, such as putting a divider in the middle of the cage so there's still some interaction. Best of luck x

I watched that episode too - I wanted to shout at the tv.

I understand where your coming from, had your vet done many succesful ones? And also did he get a health check before and after the op?

There is a risk in any surgery.
I had a boar neutered a few years ago - pre forum days.
My vets did a good job.
He was fine apart from a wobble the next day but a panicked phone call to the vet hospital gave me the advice I needed and he was fine within a couple of hours

She has helped piggies for years, but he was actually the first one she neutered. He did get both health checks done. Like I said the surgery was successful, but somewhere after it he must've caught an infection and didn't show any signs of it till it was too late.

I'm sorry to hear this 😣. Really is horrid

I wont be putting anything on the forum about Dot on the day, I'm too nervous. Anyway i better get back to topic 👍

I ask, because Bernie is the rumble strutter and boat noise maker. But Dot seems to own the cage, but Bernie can kick her out whenever he wants. And Dot can also have what veg she likes. Its like i have two evenly matched pigs. I just dont think i have a boss pig
