Hi! Can anyone help me with deciding whether or not to neuter my male guinea pig. He's 3 years and 8 months old. I want him to live with my two girls but I am SO worried about him with the surgery. I don't know whether to get him neutered or to get a neutered female guinea pig for him. However I don't know where I would be able to find one! Any help would be so appreciated!

Spayed females are very rare so you would be better considering neutering him. The success of this depends more on having a good, experienced vet and also his overall health. Do you have a cavy savvy vet who is experienced with guinea pigs? If not then find one and take him along for a health check where the vet will be able to give advice on his overall condition and whether surgery is a good idea or not

Thanks! I am planning to go to Birch heath vets to get him all checked. Normally take my guinea pigs to the vets 4 pets near me so I've never been to a specialist before. I want to make sure I'd be taking him to the best place but it's hard to know.

I would first call your vet and see if they have had experience with neutering guinea pigs. I lost Nickel due to post-op neutering complications and he was only a year old. Wishing you the best of luck xx

Okay, I'm so sorry you lost him 🙁 yeah I definitely will, I worry sometimes that some places may not be entirely truthful to just get your money!
