My boys have fallen out and blood has been shed so its very unlikely they will ever be friends again so I'm thinking along the lines of neutering so they can have their own piggy wives.

Olly is 8m and max is 6m

Would they be an ok age to neuter? They are both about 900g

Is it worth the anethetic risk?

Axx

Hi and sorry to hear that this has happened. I had my 2 castrated last monthas they had been fighting. Their age and weight will be fine to be castrated and as long as they are well. Its best to choice a vets that you trust and are happy at castrating guinea pigs. I work at a vets and I am more then happy for my vet to castrate my piggys.
One of mine took 2 days to get back to his normal self and I did syringe him baby food as he wasnt eating very much. But they are fine and are so happy now living with females!
Any anethetic with humans or animals they is a small risk, but if your pets are well and you have a good vet then I cant see there being a problem.

I've got to face the same problem, as Meeps and Pan won't get on and both are very sociable piggies. I'm doing my best piggie impressions to keep them happy, but neither of them are complimentary about my attempts.

The anaesthetic is a risk, as is the surgery itself, and I don't think the risk can be downplayed as even the most routine surgery can go wrong. However, if there's a choice between a risk for a process that will give them a chance of many happy years with company, and no risk but lonely miserable piggies, I personally feel you have to go for the op.

They should be OK size and age wise, depends how mature they are - Max *might* be a little young, the vet would have to decide.

That's interesting to note, I had heard that GP's personalities dont change the same way as other rodents do if they are neutered, and once fighting occured, they could never be reintroduced. I am glad I read this. I have another question, which I will start a new thread with, so as not to hyjack your thread, though.

This is how I understand it! My vet told me that.....

Example: When castrating a dog you wait till he can his leg, as when castrated he might never learn to his leg. As you have taken the male hormone away before the start of the hormones. I would think that this is the same as guinea pigs, as when thay are old enough to castrate they already have their male hormones rageing throught their body! So they have already learnt how to be males before they are castrated. Hope that makes sence!

I've got a neutered male living with my sow and I'm happy to say that every few months we still get a full run of "Sex and the City" - with my sow rather possessive about her mate afterwards. She won't let me near him! So he's still able to make a lady happy...

please be aware that problems can occur well after a boar has been neutered...My Smudgie was neutered last August but since February he's been having probelms with an recurring abcess on the site (it looked like he had sprouted another ball it was so big) He had to have an op to cut the abcess out & 5 stitches.+ 2weeks of antibiotics....just when we thought it was all cleared up the abcess came back so it was another two weeks of antibiotics but luckily no op this time although I had to squeeze the gunk out twice a day. He's now been off the antibiotics a week & so far ....touch wood its not come back but I'm now paranoid & I check him everytime I pick him up for any signs....The poor lad must think I'm crazy for continually looking at his nether regions!

Awww poor smudgie hope he feels better soon! I'm still dithering! My boys are in a double hutch (one on top of each other) and seem really happy like that and seem to enjoy their own space so I'm thinking they might be better off like that.
