Hi

I am wanting to get my 5 month boar neutered so he can go in with the girls. I contacted one of the exotic vets and they said they neuter from 7 weeks, seems a bit young. In contrast the vets for pets said they won’t neuter until 5 month.

Your boar should be fine being neutered at 5 months so long as the vet is experienced with guinea pigs

I agree with @Merab's Slave - you need to try and find an experienced guinea pig vet (and ask specific questions like 'how many guinea pigs would you neuter on average per year) and go with their advice.
Different vets will have different experiences and be more comfortable dealing with guinea pigs of a certain age.
I would probably be more likely to take advice from an exotics specialist than a Vets For Pets vet tbh, as chances are the exotics vet has more relevant expereince with guinea pigs.

And for what it is worth, both of my boars were neutered prior to sexual maturity at between 2 and 3 weeks of age, as are all male guinea pigs in Switzerland, so 7 weeks is certainly not too early at all!

Thanks for the replies. I asked the exotic vets if they were familiar with guinea pigs and they said they were as pigs come under the exotic pets category.

My boys were neutered at 9 weeks old and did great, I am in the US and my vet said they neuter at 2 months old.

ive had mine neutered at 12 weeks old with an exotic vet !i believe the most important point ,is that the vet is experienced in the proceedure.to prevent/minimise any complications.

Yes our husboar was neutered at our Vets4Pets, they are very good with guinea pigs. They went on weight rather than age as he was underweight when we got him, they wanted him to be over 600g. So he was 16 weeks old and 680g when neutered.

I was going to post exactly what @PigglePuggle mentions. I think it all depends on the weight of the piggy and the confidence of the vet. They're tiny critters to operate on, so babies must be so much harder to work with unless you're really comfortable with them

A vet who knows what they are doing is the most important thing. Personally I would wait until at least 4 months old so 5 months is fine!

Our vet didn't stipulate an age for neutering my skinny pig but said he had to weigh more than 800g.
