I wasn't sure quite where to put this so am putting it here...please feel free to move mods if it's wrong!

The time has come for Dodge, my lone boar, to do what always should have been done - have 'the snip' and find a ladyfriend!

He is off to see my vet on Wednesday to check he is all healthy etc, I have found a website with questions I should ask and general info on how to care for him afterwards etc. (Towels and newspaper, no other bedding, he will also come into a smaller cage as he is one for the running around like an idiot and I don't want him injuring himself!)

My biggest concern once he is through the op is how I go about getting the right girly for him once his 5 weeks of 'tadpole killing' time is over. I am a little worried where she will come from - do any of the rescues on here have a lone female? Please pm me if you do as I do NOT want to visit a pet shop and I feel a baby girl will be too small for him, he is very energetic and a bit of a plank bless him and could hurt a small guinea completely unintentionally.

As for bonding, I have read several guides and believe I should place them in a neutral space (so on the lawn in a run!) with loads of toys and hidey holes and food and let them get on with it really, keeping an eye out for any aggresive behaviour other than the normal rumbling, mounting etc...is that it?

Help and offers of any lone females would be welcome, I was meant to be contact by a rescue over the past week, they know my intentions and it was they who persuaded me to stop being selfish and get Dodge done...and lo and behold they have reserved all their girls without contacting me...how helpful :(

I wouldn't normally recommend this, but I have 2 pairs and a neutered male along with a sow that live separate! :)) Could only happen to me!

My recent pairing failed, the sow wouldn't accept the boar.

My female Pebbles I took her too choose her friend, and I must say they are in love and gorgeous together x). I would never have picked him but they sit and groom each other, sleep together and cuddle.

Fred and Wilma never met but they were originally living with Pebbles too but I felt they had a stronger bond. Which was why I got her a man of her own. They also get along brilliantly!

Guess what I'm trying to say is, if possible I would let him choose his wife if you can!

I'm sure there will be plenty of rescues on here with lots of girl pigs, you could maybe even get 2 ;).

Good luck :) xx

I really do want him to be able to choose if he can - after all he's the one living with her lol. I would rather she weren't long haired if he can manage it as I have three long/rough/difficult haired pigs as it is!

I would be happy to have two but would worry a 4ft x 2ft hutch is too small for three?

It is a bit on the small side but perfect for 2, and he could live with a baby too. I doubt he would hurt it!

I wouldn't really have felt happy having three in there so glad I wasn't just worrying too much.

I'm just worried he would squish her, he popcorns all over the place and runs about so much and generally isn't very careful :red

Ah bless, he sounds like a very enthusiastic boy! An adult sow would probably suit him better. As Joanne says maybe you could ask a rescue to let him meet their ladies and then he can choose his own wife.

Good luck! I'm sure Dodge will love havng a lady friend.

I have recently introduced a neutered boar to my three girls and they never met at first either. After a bit of a rocky start (mainly due to me being a wimp!) they are all happy together now and share food and beds happily.

Introductions were rather feisty, but I already had an established trio of ladies and Pippa was determined that she was going to remain in charge! Man or no man! rolleyes

I would really like this to be what happens...if not I know a lady who rescues on a small scale who tends to take in breeds like Abbys and Swiss, so needing some extra care but not as much as say a Peruvian, who often has single sows, so he might go there for a spot of match making!

Thank you, this is quite reassuring! I'm probably going to be a right wimp too, why can't they all just get along all the time?! lol!
