Neutering/Castration

I emailed my local Vet yesterday to ask about Neutering my two Boars. (they aren't getting along as grandly as they could :0 although no fur flying) I have read alot of what is on here and considered getting them 'done' and perhaps getting them some piggy wives.

I just got an email back from the vet saying that it is £68 per pig to CASTRATE.

Is this the same thing? I'm sorry for being daft.. ( I always thought I was quite intelligent"))

Does it really cost this much, I haven't spoken to them on the phone yet so don't know if this includes any after care meds or anything but knowing them it probably doesn't !

Any Advice would be much appreciated.I feel a bit lost now i thought i had all the right ideas! mallethead if it is really this much I would rather just spend the money on a bigger cage EACH! and just let them have run around time together!

Castrating a pig is the same as neutering.
My vets charge £45 per pig for castration (Incl meds and aftercare), £68 does sound a little on the high side.

£68 is a lot for a guinea pig. My vet charges £60 to neuter a rabbit! :o

I recently had my 2 boys done, it was £60 each, but included as many post-op appointments as required. This was good because one of the boys had a reaction to the stitches and is going back for his 4th check-up next week! I still had to pay for the antibiotics but this isn't too much compared with consult fees (would have been £80!).

Getting boys castrated doesn't change their temperament tho, so if they're fighting now then getting them done wont help the situation and you'd have to split them into 2 cages anyway. I got my boys done as I already have girls to bond them with when they're safe.

If you do decide to go ahead with it I'd say focus more on the quality of the vet than the price. I found a really good one, but there are lots out there that really don't operate on piggys very often. Plus expensive doesn't always = good so ask them lots of questions!

Daisyd where abouts in Surrey are you ?.. I might be close to your vet so would much prefer to pay the money if I know I'm going to a recommended one.
I'm wondering if perhaps just splitting them up into different cages will do the trick and allow them to calm down I'd hate to seperate them but they do just seem to constantly annoy each other. I know it can wear off after a year but I don't want to take any chances:{

Hi, I'm in Guildford. The vets I use are Pet Doctors on Epsom Road. They were recommended to me as they do the castrations for our local rescue, Guildford Rabbit Rehome (who have piggies too!). I have to say they've been excellent with my Guineas and both vets and vet nurses are always very caring and lovely whenever I have to take them in as well as being very knowledgeable.
