Our rescue piggie, Dave, is doing very well and is itching to get his teeth stuck into the girls - of course he probably doesn't realise he has been neutered, and if he does he certainly doesn't seem to care!

We want to make sure there is no chance of any unwanted pregnancies so have decided to keep him away from them for 6 whole weeks from the date of the op - he is allowed in the garden in a cage next to them to get everyone used to each other but there is no chance of him actually getting to them.

We chose six weeks as we have researched it and that seems a pretty good consensus as to a safe time but we have also seen mention of as little as 3 weeks or as many as 7 just to be safe. Just wondering what the general feeling is here - should we wait even longer?

Also, when others have been in this position what has been the reaction of the male when finally put in with the females - at the moment Dave is displaying and dancing to them as soon as they come near the cage so he is very keen, to the point where when put back in his cage at night he just collapses in his slipper with exhaustion! Will he be having 'piggy-back-rides' all day or will it be a case of a job well done in the morning and then on with the business of eating for the rest of the day?

Here is the little romeo, all tuckered out after another busy day showing off...

6 weeks is the recommended time so don't let him in with females 3 or 4 days early as this can still produce unwanted pregnancies.

You are right to wait six weeks. When I introduced my neutered boar to the girls he was so excited and rumblestruuted away. I am sure your little one will be the same.

I love the way you put it - "giving piggie back rides" :lol!:

I am hoping a more experienced forum member will inform us a bit more about this.

I have a neutered boar (Max) and 2 sows ( Bess and Sparkle). Max can go for days just rumbling and grooming and generally being a perfect gentleman . BUT, when he's in the mood for LUV , it's piggie back rides +++.

I'd like to know if this is normal.

Yes it is normal. My neutered boar mounts and rumblestruts constantly. The boar will be driven to this behaviour even more when the sows are in season.

It depends on the pigs really. I had boar (neutered) and sow pairings a lot over the years.

my first two pigs were boars who had to be separated so they got neutered and wifes. The boys had a wife each. My tiger didnt bother with any "funny business" with his first wife ever I dont think his wife would put up with it. she passed away with mamory tumours and then he got a baby girl friend he fathered her more than dated her so they didn't really get rumbling either.

my george was the opposite her used to chase and mount his wife like clockwork ever two weeks until he got a little older.

at the minute I have another couple made up of a very dominant girl who I took on as she was too nasty to other girls my boy rupert is her hubby he was about 6 months when I paired them up where as she is about 3ish. She wont take any messing and he nolonger tries lol.

its down to personality. You'll either end up with a pig who mounts each time a girl is on heat or one whos gets trained to pack it in after a few months.

Oh should have also said. I would go with six weeks. I have done that with the three boys ive had done and never had any accidents. My fourth is waiting at present 6 weeks feels like forever at the time but well worth it. We have a member on here who had a pregnsncy after 5 weeks so that last week is critical.

Thanks for the replies @Briony_S & @piggyfan . I'm still getting aquainted with my trio. Sometimes it looks like Max is boss and other times I think he is hen pecked. It's good to know his behaviour in the love dept is normal.

I am looking forward to hearing how Dave gets on .

Interesting to read, as I'm waiting to get my baby Alfie neutered!

I was wondering how it would be after! A long time for us yet though!

The countdown has begun - 2 more days and Dave can be let loose!

The poor little thing has spent the last 5 and a half weeks wriggling his bum at the girls through the bars, which hasn't been helped by the fact one of the girls in particular seems as keen to get to him as he is to her!

All are currently living in the living room in separate cages side by side so they can see each other, and spend hours each day separated by wire in the garden and there has been no signs of aggression at all so we are quite hopeful for a nice, easy introduction, hopefully all will go well and they can live in one big cage together as we are going to link the two cages via a small tube so one is for sleeping and one for food and toys etc.

Here is another photo of Ol' Snake-hips himself, pretty handsome piggie we reckon...

and here is one of his prospective girlfriends, looking a little shocked after we explained what Wednesday morning has in store for her...

Only bit of preparation left is to find my old Barry White CD so we can set the mood....

Rebel was left for 6 weeks following his op. Just be careful, after carefully bathing his stitches and keeping him scrupulously clean, 2 weeks after moving in with the girls, he developed an abscess and had to spend another 3 weeks in the hospital cage waiting for jiggy jiggy. After all that waiting, the first time he put his sexy face on - both girls scolded him and chased him round the hutch like a scene from the Benny Hill show! :)) Needless to say, he doesn't bother now, everytime I hear rumble strutting, its soon followed by loud chattering and it all goes quiet. :lol!:
