I have never had to have any guineapigs neutered so know nothing at all about which is the best option but now I am thinking about getting a friend or friends for Alan I have been thinking about it.

Is it possible to get neutered females and leave Alan intact?

All I have considered so far is getting him done to accommodate any lady friends should I go down that route. I was discussing this with my OH over the weekend and he mentioned if they were done would he need to be?

Any thought/advice would be much appreciated :)

There is a rescue who has all their pigs neutered, male or female and I know their vet is highly regarded as the best for spaying. I think they hold a waiting list.

Personally I prefer to neuter boars, I've had quite a few done over the years and have had no real problems. Don't get me wrong, there can be problems but it's a less risky op than having a sow done.

As I've not had a neutered sow I can't possibly say about whether he should be done too. He could still get amourous as the urge is still there with an intact boar and there is nowhere for that to go if the sow is neutered so I suppose it would be better for both to be done? People with neutered sows will be able to help you more on that one. I know with rabbits that you'd not intro an entire to a neutered.

The only rescue that spays sows as well as boars as a matter of policy is Rugby Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare. They tend to have quite a waiting list depending on how many girls come in in first place and make it through the op well. http://www.rngp.org/index-contact.shtml
Spaying is a much more invasive and expensive operation, so finding a spayed girl is a bit like finding gold in Britain! Mostly, girls are spayed because of medical reasons.

Neutering is a much more straight forward operation compared to spaying. If you can bear to part with Alan, I would recommend that you use Simon Maddock in Northampton. He neuters and spays for Rugby rescue and is one of the best guinea pig vets in the Midlands. I am sure that something can be arranged through the forum.

Pickle, a spayed sow, lives with Archie who is intact and they get on really well. Archie is a very fragile piggie as he has extensive dental issues, so wouldn't have been a good candidate for castrating, so having a spayed wife is ideal for him.

Pickle came from Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare in Rugby. Simon Maddock does all their neutering ops and he is so experienced with spaying that it is no more risky than a castration. This isn't the case generally though.

If you would like Simon to neuter your boy, I am more than happy to have him here to stay for a few days and to take him in for his op.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I will bear in mind everything and thanks Furryfriend's for that offer.

I did contact one of Sophie's colleagues (from a rescue near me; she is a forum member) and she lives in Norwich very close to me saying they have many piggys go in for neutering and never have any problems during or post op so I could possible take him there should I decide to neuter him. Northampton isn't far from me and my cousin lives there so I could possibly come down for the weekend.

It's good to know others with different set-up's; I've never had to think about getting another piggy and bonding. It scares the life out of me as I would hate to end up with another seperate single piggy! :{
