I recently adopted a single 2 year old male cavy from a rescue centre.
He is not neutered and was separated from others after fighting a lot.
I would like to get him neutered so he can have a sow companion.

I have only had him a week but he seems to be settling in quite nicely; how long should I wait before getting him neutered and then, after neutering, how long should I wait before getting a new female ?

After neutering its a 6 week wait until he can meet ladies face to face (or, not so much face to face, the girl bits to boy bits end!), ask a vet to give him a health check (always a good idea for a new piggy) and discuss booking a neutering appointment at the same time. Our little boar Theo had to wait a month to be neutered because someone had lied about his age and he was too little and underweight, but if you and the vet are both happy that he's healthy there's no reason to wait really.

It's also worthwhile finding a good vet, who is confident with guinea pigs to minimise any complications.
