what is the earliest age/weight that my young boar can be neutered? he is in a cage with a young female at the moment. many thanks!

I have heard that they can be done at 12 weeks at the earliest and if they weigh 650g. I'm no expert though, so don't count me on this. I've been researching for my Archie who needs the snip soon. He's 10 weeks and weighs about 500-550g. When I took him to the vets the other day they said I could do him as soon as I wanted. I suppose it depends on the competence of the vet, but I think I'll still wait a couple of weeks. Hope this helps :)

Normally we look at getting boars done from 4 months, but it would depend on the boar, small animals take longer to develop. But no vet will be able to do them until the testicles are properly down.
How old are they now? as he will need to be away from the sow from 5 weeks but only if she is the same age as him if she's older then, I'm sorry to say he would need to be away from 3 weeks. As there have been cases of 4 week old boars getting their mothers pregnant and also their sisters from 6 weeks.

Thanks for all your replies, our young lad "Chico", is only 3 weeks old, & the other one "Marmite", is his sister, so they are the same age. The lady we got them from says that they have to weigh 220g before we can have him neutered, but I thought that was too small. Btw it wasn't my idea to have a girl & boy in the same cage, we wanted just two girls, but understandably the seller wanted to give us the boy & girl for obvious reasons! ;)

You will have to keep them side by side pretty soon! We recommend to keep boys and any sows separate from 3 weeks onwards.

How soon you can neuter depends on how well he is developed and on the vet. It really pays to look around for an experienced, guinea pig savvy vet - it can make a huge difference on the outcome of the op and the recovery. You could try and ask your nearest reputable rescue who they use or could recommend.

My vet won't do boars until they are 6 months old as he says their organs are not fully developed until then.

the person letting you have them at 3 wks is a bit wrong i feel they are too young really they should be 6 wks 5 at the very earliest, even though boars and some baby sows are taken from mum at 3 wks of age, they should still be kept with in the vicinity until 6 wks rolleyes

what do they weigh now?

Yes I thought that, I was surprised when she let us have them so soon! My husband & daughter went to see them & returned home with them. They weigh 174 & 196g at the moment. Is it possible that they can mate this early? I had Ginuea pigs as a child but can't remember much!
