This is probably on the forum elsewhere but could not find it. My boar is 2 years old and lives on his own in the house, he is a happy chap but people have said to have him neutered. I have never done this with any of my other pigs and not sure why he needs to be done. So I am asking why should he be done and any risks, my last pig had an operation for a lump then passed away due to anasthesia so I am worried about Birdie having an op.
 
Oh ok, no I was not thinking of getting another pig, I do however board other peoples pigs but they are downstairs away from Birdie I hope he is not distressed by the female pigs. He seems fine at the present.
 
Your boy only needs neutering if you want to make him extremely happy and let him live with a sow companion of his choice. In this country, you also have the option to boar date at some good rescues for a character compatible boarfriend if you are worried about an operation. Birdie is still not yet halfway through his life.

There are a very few piggies that are not interested in others of their kind and a few that cannot get on with others and do better as next door company to other piggies, but the vast majority of piggies prefer to have company if you let them choose. You will never know what kind of piggy Birdie is unless you give him the choice at a place where you will only come home with a companion if there has been success.

We are following RSPCA recommendations when giving advice. It is of course up to you whether you want to consider it.

PS: Did you know that in Switzerland (where I am from) it is against the law to sell, keep or rehome single piggies? The law has been voted on and passed by the population.

Are these people who know about piggies as I've never heard about boars needing to be neutered and I read a lot on here, I heard it about dogs, but never heard it about piggies.
He really does need to be with another guinea as they need company of their own kind.

Wow! What an interesting P.S. If that is typical of Swiss laws, it sounds as though you are light-years ahead of us supposedly animal-loving Brits!

I wonder if we can get it to be law in the UK! Now there a plan......
 
Yes, as people have already said, he will only need to be neutered if you're planning to get him a female friend. The bonding should start 6 weeks after the neuter.

Neutering for any other reason (other than medical) is not needed.. it doesn't change their behaviour and it doesn't make them get along better with other pigs. I do reccomend that you take him to a reputable rescue and try speed dating with another boar though :)
 
We got him at 8 weeks he was being a bit bullied by the other boars as he was very small, so that is why he is on his own he runs around the living room and sits on my foot or by the computer on the desk most of the time going back to his castle for a drink or food, I have had pigs for years and he is my first single pig and to be honest he seems a very happy chap. He is still very tiny and possibly will be scared if introduced to other pigs as he had a bad start. Thanks for the advice though
