hi all.

I am in a dilemma. What age can a boar be neutered?

I just rescued one from an adoption centre in P@H and I want him to go in with my girls. I know that he has to be quarantined and wait 6 weeks after the operation, but I couldn't simply not get him. He was on his own!

Now I feel bad for getting him!
 
I'm not sure but I would imagine fairly young.

I've only had one neutered boar and he had just been neutered when I got him. He weighed less than 700g so he wasn't that old.

I would imagine a pig from the adoption section at Pets at Home isn't that young as they're usually returned pigs or pigs they can't sell.
 
I just don't want him to be on his own for too long. I have a female Rex who is 22-25 weeks old and he is about the same size as her, but I do have a vets appointment on Wednesday 23rd to chat to the vet and for him to have a look at the new bundle of fluff.

I feel so bad about getting him, but if I had left him I would feel just as bad.
 
I haven't spoken to the vets but the receptionist said between 4-5 months for neutering. If he is on his own for too long will that affect his social interaction?

Keeping him close to the girls so they can interact through the cages while he's waiting to join them. He'll need to be in a cage with a lid (if a c&c cage)
 
I think officially they can be neutered from 3 months, although some vets prefer to wait until they are older.
But the good news is that it sounds like your little guy is already old enough, so not too much waiting around for the op part at least.
And whilst I think it is probably a Swiss thing, most boars here are neutered at 2 weeks old and popped straight back into their family group (with Mum, and siblings) until they are old enough to be re-homed permanently at around 8 weeks old.
 
Wow...that is amazing. Two weeks old. If that had happened here it would be easier for him.

I have never kept a boar before, but he really is lovely. My OH cuddled him and he snuggled against him and hurried his head into the crook of his arm to hide. My OH told me at that point that we were not leaving the store without him. But he will be on his own for a bit...
 
Thank you Crystella. He is a stunner. I'm just lost at the moment. I feel so bad because he is on his own that I feel very sick. I'm doing the best I can yet it seems...wrong somehow.
 
:hug: and lots of attention to make up for the lack of guinea pig interaction. It will also help him to bond with you and your OH too. He's gone to a better place than staying at P@H (yes I know there is some good ones out there) and he'll have his own set of piggie wives once he's been done

Thank you Crystella. He's currently talking to himself and I'm struggling keeping my hands off of him. My OH made it quite clear that he is his, but I can name him...and nothing gets in the way of daddy piggy.

No point beating yourself up, none of us are perfect and now that you have him at least your sorting him out a vets appointment and arranging his neutering.

Just please don't make the mistake of letting him have any kind of playtime with your girls until he has been neutered and gone through the 5-6wks period to make sure your girls can't get pregnant.

He may be lonely but he will get through it and it will be worth the wait in the end. Definitely make sure if he is next to the girls that he has no way into their cage at all. Trust me, eliminate every possibility, even the slightest little gap he might squeeze through - little lads can be determined and things happen very fast!

I hope all goes well with his neutering and then his introduction to your girls when he is ready.

He is going to be in our bedroom for two weeks during his quarantine, and there is no way that he will be in with the girls...after his quarantine his cage will be put next to the girls C&C cage.
 
That's really good you're doing it all properly and its really nice he'll be getting lots of interaction from you while waiting - i'm sure he'll be fine! :nod:

image.webp I think the cage is too small but it's not his forever home. There's a 2x5 C&C cage and two girlies waiting to see their handsome to be husboar!

Yes I will post updates. Do you have any idea about games? Cutie, Snowy and snowball don't do anything for his masculine ego!

That looks fine as a temporary home for a baby - and i've a feeling he'll be coming out for lots of cuddles :luv:

I love doing name suggestions, but please can you remind us of your girls names to inspire?

Awww... you have a Poppy too :luv: My Poppy is an Agouti, no idea how i'm meant to describe her colour though...

So name suggestions for your new chap;
My OH thinks - Socket (:D), Thor, Franklin, Bert, Einstein.
I think - Aspen, Laurel, Linden, Star.

May be back if we think of any more... :)
 
my OH chirpped up with Conan or Spectra, where as I thought of Ghost, Casper or Jon Snow
 
Awww he looks like a fuzzy dandelion clock! He is one lucky boar. Hope the op goes smoothly when the time comes.
