After some thinking I want my lone pig, Ginger, to have company. He doesn't get on with boars (whole reason he is alone) so will need sows. Can a 4 1/2 year old boar be neutered safely?
I was told no and to get the sow spayed but everywhere I've looked says that spaying is far more complicated and risky than neutering.
What's the right thing to do here? Also, if it is doable, can he live with one or two?

Neutering and the success of any operation greatly improves the more cavy savvy your vet is. Any anaesthetic is going to be a risk for even the healthiest and youngest of piggies. Overall health is going to have an impact too. I would look to book an appointment with an exotics specialist who is very cavy savvy (not all exotics are cavy savvy) for a better health check and feel for whether the operation is worth the risk.

If neutered then I would say a bonded sow pairing would be good to join him
