I have 2 boars. Sam & Dean. They are 3 months old on the 12/11/18. My vet has said I need to neuter both of them. Due to the fact that Dean keeps bullying Sam. Most of the time they cuddle up together and even sleep next to each other. I don't know what to do. Please can someone offer some advice. Dean is the all Black one. Sam is the Black and Brown one

Thank you
.

Neutering does not change guinea pig behaviour, if only stops pregnancy. so if they don’t get on properly now, then neutering will not change that.
They are hitting their hormonal teenage period, so this is why you are seeing ‘bullying’. Take the time to Read the guides on here about boar behaviour and dominance to identify whether it really is ‘bullying’ or whether it is perfectly normal teenage boar behaviour. The fact you say they cuddle up together and are seemingly fine most of the time suggests that it is just hormones kicking in. You do still need a keep an eye on them though because if there is going to be a breakdown in their relationship, it will be during their teenage period (up until a year old).

To add, it is important with boars to make sure that they have a large cage and two of all equipment. Also ensure that hidey houses are open ended so that one piggy cannot be cornered.

Doesnt change behaviour this is fact. Your vet is very wrong. Ignore and buy a bigger cage. May sort your problem and save quite a few pounds. Good luck dont get them neutered! Thanks lol

I'll keep my eye on them. Dean keeps trying to mate with Sam he hasn't done it for a couple of days now. They also chase each other. Sam is really quiet doesn't make any noises due to the fact that Dean snatches his vegetables off him and is just a bully. I monitor them eating now. To make sure they are getting on. Sam has been quiet since I got and and Dean has been loud. Thank you I'll keep a close eye out.

Thank you I'm getting a bigger cage on Friday it has stairs in it upstairs and downstairs so hopefully it'll be okay. Thank you.

Mounting and chasing is perfectly normal. It means that The one doing the mounting is the dominant pig of the pair. If he is stealing food, then it is very important to make sure you have multiple food bowls as he will not be able to guard all the bowls at once.

As I say, do read the guides as it will show what is normal and what is a cause for concern. For the moment though, it sounds as though their behaviour is what would be expected of teenage boars.

Do check that their cage is big enough - how big is it? - as that can really make a difference to their relationship

They have 2 food bowls and 2 water bottles. It's only the vegetables he snatches. They get enough food and plenty of water

It is L77cm W48cm H42cm I'm getting a bigger one on Friday.

Yes that is far too small. What size is the one you are getting? For boars you need to have a 160cm cage or bigger.

What vet are you using exactly? You might benefit from having a look through this forums vets locator, sounds like you really need a new one. Just thinking if one of your pigs gets sick you are going to have a big problem

That hutch is fine. I have the bluebell for my two boars (teenagers). They also have a large playpen permamently attached to their hutch and their door is always open so they can come out and play whenever they like.
The important thing with boars is just to make sure they have enough room to get away from each other and that no one piggy can get cornered by the other. The teenage phase can be hard work but do your research on what is normal so you are prepared

I have actually put a bannister up on the top level so they can’t fall off the ledge - if is a very big hole and a big drop on that hutch. I’ve atrached a picture so you can see what I mean. 1D8A433B-7B4A-4DDC-B50B-BC74362F7CBB.webpThe ramp is also fairly steep so you may need to prop it up to reduce the gradient.

Neutering both would probably have cost you about £140 plus uneccessary stress on your pigs. Go spend on a hutch and still have change left over. Let us know how it goes

It would have cost £200. £100 per Guinea Pig. I will do thank you 🙂

Wow - £100.....and it’s s bit worrying that the vet doesnt seem to know that it won’t change piggy behaviour. Definitely look around to find another vet. As @Skypipdot said, if one of them has health issues, you need to know that you have a cavy savvy vet on hand.
My vet charges £50 for a male neuter and £70 for a spay. I’ve used them for more years than I care to remember and they’ve always been fantastic with all my animals!

Maple Manor XL Hutch for Rabbits and Guinea Pigs | Pets At Home.
I have decided I'm going to get this one it's bigger so should be fine. I'll have a look around. Deans not long got over a cold he had a cold when I bought him. Bought them both from Pets at Home. It cost me £23 for his cold treatment my mate said that's not cheap but I don't really know if that was. He's fine now. Thank goodness

That hutch is great. I was going to get that one but my boys live in my shed and that hutch wouldn’t fit in!
