Hi

I had what I thought were two females and then two babies appeared who I think are both boys.

I am just thinking about getting the Dad neutered and putting him back with the Mum. However, I’m absolutely terrified of losing him under anaesthetic - he’s 6 months old.

There is nobody listed anywhere near me on the approved vets list (Worcestershire), the others are all over an hour and a half away. I really don’t know what to do.

Hi

6 months is a good age as the testicles are descended and should be visible now.

Here is our comprehensive Neutering guide: Neutered / De-sexed Boars And Neutering Operations: Myths, Facts and Post-op Care

If you decide on it, I am wishing you all the best.

I'm also in Worcestershire, if you're near Kidderminster, ask for Gavin at Maggie and Marlow, he has done all my castrations with no complications, and done the majority of the spays on my girls that have needed it which is over 10 at this point. Plus various other surgeries! I would recommend him in a heartbeat.

Failing that, Marie at Evolution Exotics has done the rest of my guinea pigs surgeries before she opened her own practice, but that is a referral practice only, I believe, so you'll need another vet to refer you to her. But again, excellent vet. Although it's a little outside Worcestershire, in Cleobury Mortimer but its still close and worth the journey, people travel from all over the UK to see her.

PS: My two youngest-aged neutered boys were just turned 4 months (as soon as the clinic would allow), brothers Baeddan and Brangwyn, who have just turned three years old and live with a sow each as they are too competitive to get on and have always been.

The boar who has provided the reference pictures for the before, just after and fully shrunk reference documentation for the Neutering guide link was my Nye, who was incidentally 6 months old when he had the snip himself; he lived to 6 years of age.

I've used the Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton, who have as close to a 100% success rate as you can get so it is worth considering to travel further afield if you are after total peace of mind. I've always had a problem-free recovery with all my piggies neutered or spayed there.

Ah - I’m willing to travel for peace of mind, so thank you 😊

Thank you 😊

for what it's worth, i just got my boy neutered (he's around 9 months they think) and he's doing well! his surgery was the 5th and we brought him home yesterday the 6th, he's already been eating pretty well and he takes one of two meds and his critical care easily! the other med i do have to hold him to give but it's not nearly as bad as, say, trying to syringe something to my cat.

i was worried about the risks but luckily my vet was confident and deals with gpigs fairly frequently. from what i was told they seem to have an easier time when they're younger! they did send us home with critical care, pain relief and an antibiotic, and syringes for all - when you find a vet i'd suggest asking about post-op supplies! they also demonstrated how to hold him to syringe feed.
