I'm currently making sure everything is ready for Harry hopefully making some new friends soon. A lot of things for the cage are ready to go, but I'm really concerned that I can't get enough of the smell out of the fleece. I don't want there to be anything to jeopardise the bonding!

Am I overthinking this? Will a couple of hot washes be enough, or should I just try and replace the liners?

White vinegar (distilled vinegar) is a great odour neutraliser. When I’m doing a new bonding I use just puppy pads and hay to start with in the bonding pen. And if it’s successful I move to the cage which has fleece or bath mats that have been washed in the machine with non bio powder and white vinegar in the rinse. I think that’s sufficient to remove the odours.

Thanks guys, I might do one in a hot wash and one with vinegar to see which works best on our fleece/smells. ...and maybe work in some time outside if the weather allows. :))

It sounds like I was worrying unnecessarily, thanks for the reassurance 😊

If anyone is interested in the verdict, both routes turned out beautifully but the vinegar was ever so slightly better. I buried my nose in both to be absolutely sure and they both just smelled like clean laundry. Weather did not permit drying outside of course 🙄

(What I did:

One 1hr 60⁰C wash, no detergent or vinegar, followed by one 1.5hr 60⁰C wash, no detergent or vinegar.

vs

One 1hr 60⁰C wash, no detergent, vinegar in the fabcon tray, followed by one 1hr 60⁰C wash, no detergent or vinegar.)

Edit to add that I was very confident in their cleanliness before I buried my nose in them :))

How much vinegar did you use please?

I am glad you checked... I found one of our fleeces in the house after cleaning and assumed my partner had washed it (with it not being in the machine or wash basket where it should be), but no - he had not cleaned it, he'd put it to one side and forgotten, and there was I just thinking some hay had stuck to it whilst my face was buried on wee :yikes: 😭 I soon realised that no, it was just dirty 🤦🏼‍♀️

lol xx

I just filled it to the line in the fabcon tray, not sure how much it was 🙂 (not over the line because then it just goes in, not when the machine adds water)

I get the vinegar from Tesco only 29p a bottle. I now use it for sofa throws, towels and cushion covers.
