I went to petco today to buy my hay as my piggies have been just eating and eating hay like crazy! I was going to buy a large 96 oz bag and then I looked at the price... $18!! :o It really hit me that I've been paying waaaaaaaaay too much for my hay. I'm a teen and I don't make much money so it's really important to me that I get the best deals for all my pets.

I live in a fairly large suburb but there's a part of town that randomly becomes farm-like. There's this building that looks like a barn and it says hay and grain on the side; I figure, I might as well have a look and ask if they carry Timothy Hay. Sure enough, they do. The best part? $5 for a flake of a bale. I was thinking "oh a flake of a bale... that's not a lot." but when the guy brought it back to my car I realized it was probably 192 oz of fresh hay! Fresher than anything I could buy at the pet store.

Long story short, if you have a hay & grain shop nearby your house, go buy your hay there. It'll save you money and your guinea pigs will thank you for the freshness.

... to think I've been paying $13 more than I needed to every time I bought hay... Yeesh!

Pet store hay isn't that great usually. Except Oxbow. But yes, stockfeed stores usually carry bulk so they can sell it to very cheap! I get a whole bale of quality meadow hay for $12.50AU. Buying a 1.13kg bag of Oxbow Timothy Hay here in Australia will cost $40AU, and that's not including shipping!

So yes, buy from stockfeed stores everyone! You will save a fortune!

I get mine from a livestock place, much cheaper, and much fresher! I've tried all sorts with my pigs, and have done "taste tests" and they always go for the cheaper hay! I think they appreciate the fact that it's not been sat in a bag and on a shelf for months :))

I buy Burgess Excell timothy hay with dandelions its especially for piggies. Its fab and my piggies go nutz for it :)

when i bought petshop meadow hay it was full of little bugs and mites.

since using Burgess Excell products ive had no problems at all

hope it helps rolleyes

I dont understand the obsession with Timothy Hay.

I get a bale of horse hay every 6 months. If it is good enough for ponies, it is good enough for Piggies!

Although they did prefer one bale over another, but they have to live with this current one until it runs out and the new hay crop is in!

@SPIGGY I duno but my piggies go nutz for Timothy Hay - thats why i get them it :))

I dunno whatever they want i give them

I like Timothy hay because it has more soft, grassy strands. (My piggies throw all the hard straw-like pieces on the floor... ugh.) You're lucky to not have such picky pigs!

Timothy hay is better for their teeth(encourages them to chew properly and vets recommend it).. I have a gripe with meadow hay though, every time I bought it in the past from feed merchants it came with unwanted pests... mites.. I find shop bought vacuum sealed hay doesn't bring the little critters with them...
I probably spend about £7 a week on the stuff, but I like my piggies to have the best of everything:)
