I adopted a guinea pig today from pets at home. I put him in a little pen when I got home while i got his cage ready and noticed that he holds his head to one side. He runs about and frisks perfectly fine but I'm just a little concerned that something might be causing him to do this. Has anyone seen this before?

i'd advice you to go to the vet as this could be some form of ear infection or it could just be something he was born with like just a fault, hope that helps (:

I've phoned them at pah and it turns out that he had an abscess on his cheek when he was about 2 months old, he had it drained and was on treatment for it when it came back, so the poor little thing had to go through surgery again! This side tilt is something that he's always going to have but it won't affect him. I have to say, it does add to the cuteness!

oh bless, keep an eye out for a recurrence of the abscess, i hope he gets on ok

Poor little piggy :( I hope he is getting on ok. Fingers crossed that it doesn't come back, abscesses can be an absolute nightmare.

This is the wonky headed little guy x)

If it were me, I'd be inclined to take him for a health check with a cavy savvy vet, just for peace of mind. It'll cost max. £35-£40, but it would be much cheaper than leaving it and something more serious developing. P@H sadly aren't the most knowledgable and it'd be a shame for this to be the start of something more serious that gets overlooked.

I would also ask for his medical history, and give this to whatever surgery you are registered/decide to register with so that they know exactly what's happened in the past.

I'm going to keep a very close eye on him for now, so far he does seem absolutely fine. I've already got rather attached and wouldn't want anything to go wrong with him!

Oh poor little boy :( abscesses can be and are very nasty! :)>>>
Didn't know they could cause head tilt tho ...... ?
I'm with Amanda i'd be seeing a cavy savvy vet who can definitely rule out anything else!
Give him some little kisses from us all xoxoxoxoxoxo

Apparently he had the head tilt from the beginning and the vet thinks it could be a matter of habit that he still holds it that way. They first came across him with the abscess and head tilt when he was 2 months old and he is now 6 months so the vets gave him the all clear. So my boy just has a little quirk!

How strange he would just hold it that way out of habit. I wonder what another vet who had not seen him before would say.
