hello everyone.. in about a week i will recieve my first couples of GP. This be my first pet so still unsure wat to do with them...

But my friend will help me cos she givng them to me..

Was wondering if u can put male and female in same hutch and wat if the female is pregnant can u still leave the male in there? or when the female has the baby can the male still b there? in the same hutch or need to be separated?

thank all

hey welcome to the forum!

If the male is neutered then yes he can stay in there. If not no... the females can get pregnant within an hour after giving birth... i would suggest now leaving the male in before she gives birth either unless you know when she will give birth... the male babies also need to be seperated from their mum when theyre 4 weeks old because thats when hthey reach sexual maturity (sometimes before) and could get the mum or sisers pregnant.

Good luck with the pigs! Hope yo enjoy the forum!

Hi There

Welcome to the forum.

Are you intending on breeding?

Hi, i'm new to the forum and guinea pigs too, but you'll find everyone here is really helpful and knowledgeable (is that a word? 98)). Welcome and good luck with your new pets :)

Welcome to the forum! If the male is neutered he can stay in with her, if not he needs to come out. The baby boys should be separated at 3-4 weeks so there are no more babies. Since she is already pregnant you should definitely read everything you can about guinea pig prenancies, births, complications, and just guinea pigs in general. If you ever need gp help this is definitely the place to come, we're all willing and able ;D

Congrats on your soon-to-be piggies! They're tons of fun and you'll see that lots of people here have great advice and stories about them.

Also, I wouldn't suggest purposely breeding a piggy, because it's important that you read up first and learn about guinea pig pregnancies. Also, if you breed a guinea pig who is past a specific age it will be impossible for her to give birth and she will either need a c-section when it's time or she'll die during labor :-\ If you suspect that the guinea pig is pregnant and don't know how old she is, you should take her to a vet!

It might be worth noting she would be unlikely to have 'the baby' as there is usually more than one... if the babies are male they cannot live in the same cage as another male (even their dad) and ladies or they would war with each other. I would give it some serious thought. Get used to caring for a couple of piggys before you think about getting more. They may be harder work than you expect.

I would get two girls or two boys do not get one of each. Guinea pigs should not be bred from if they are brother and sister and vet care could work out very expensive you risk the life of your piggie too. There are lots of piggies up and down the country in rescues that need a home. Please do not breed your piggies.
