Hi everyone hope your all enjoying your sunday :-) just a thread enquiring if you have come across and treats for your piggys that are a little more unusual compared to boring carrot or cucumber etc, just want to give Ditto something hes never tried before inestead of the same variation of veggys all the time.. X

I found a new treat bar at tesco it's called a snack bar, and i know not everyone is into giving piggies treats that aren't veggies but they seemed really nice and similar to the seed sticks but it just looked like mushed up veggies and it went down a treat with all my piggies which is saying something as Marmite only eats the burgess herbage mix or veggies normally ! They smelt gorgeous too !

Many of the treats you can buy are high in sugar and fat, these ones included, which is why they are so attractive to the piggies. I think the Naturals range is better than most but still be sure to check the nutritional information. Fresh veg and herbs aren't boring to guinea pigs. If you want things to be more of a treat then feed a greater variety of foodstuffs - go out and collect plants, increase the range of veggies you give, grow some herbs. Some things can only be fed occassionally anyway so they automatically become a treat and you can always keep back certain things they really like and only offer them as treats. Giving willow or apple sticks is also a great treat and hiding things in treat balls or toilet roll tubes can also give them entertainment. :)

This lists loads of things that you can give your pigs and any of them could be used as a treathttp://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42

I understand lots of people feel they shouldn't be fed sort of thing but my piggies like them and it's not like they aren't getting a good diet i feed them there hay and nuggets etc. so i think it's fine for them to have them as a treat, but each to there own :))

I agree twiams . I think it is a little hypocritical of me to not alloe ditto treats occasionally such as yogurt drops and petshop treats ASWELL as his fresh veggys everyday when i myself eat a very healthy diet but on the weekens enjoy chocolate and a chinese takeaway. Ditto is happy and healthy so they cant be that unhealthy .

I find this idea of treats to be a wonderfully human viewpoint but I agree so long as they are happy and healthy and fed a proper diet otherwise, that's the main thing. :))

I think it is fine to give them a treat like that occaisionally providing it is not an every day thing.
Lets face it, do we eat salad every day?

I feed healthy "treats" just as something different for my pigs to eat.
I feed fresh and dried apple, willow and hawthorn leaves and twigs. Dandelion leaves, flowers and roots, daisies and rose petals. I sometimes sprinkle premade dried mixes over the hay.
I also feed Fibafirst monoforage as a treat. Its actually a guinea pig food but is great for this purpose. It is sticks similar in size and shape as those salt and vinegar stick crisps. I can add a photo of them if you want.
My boys really like them.

Dandelion tubes

These are made by burgess (who make excell) 4 in a pack and are rolled grass&dandelion wrapped in vegetable fibre. So they look like cigars. My boys love them, real healthy as well.:)

I am making my way round the garden in terms of herbs! I think some new herb each day will keep them amused and adventurous at trying new things! So far mint, rosemary and parsley are huge hits!

Yes - herbs are a great favourite with my piggies too! Especially parsley - coriander too, I am going to try mint next - haven't done yet but I am sure they will love it!

mine love red pepper too.

I don't give mine fruit everyday because of the sugar so when I give them fruit is a a huge deal for them because I usually pick their favorites. I usually give them fruits when I clean their cage about every 3 or 4 days, and also after baths they get fruit. :)

I am thinking of starting with herbs too because they haven't had herbs yet and I like growing plants in my house and these could be grown in the piggy room so my kitties won't steal them :))
