Little Nina (One of Buttercup's two babies) still weighs exactly the same as she did when she was born. 1.8.09 = 63g 9.8.09 = 63g This little one just isnt putting weight on yet she is always eating. She nibbles hay, veggies, dry food- especially the flat green bits in gp muesli, at the moment she has been nibbling at bread soaked in goats milk. She has had a wee bit of critical care from a syringe, very carefully. But still she looks sort of stumpy just like a newborn. She does feed from mum, although I don't think often enough? She is very active and gallops around. :{ :... :...
Buttecup's other bub, Nuggett is coming on in leaps and bounds.
Any ideas anyone? Thanks. xx

Sorry no advice to offer, but just wanted to let you know we are thinking of little Nina. Sounds like you are doing everything I would have suggested, so hopefully someone with experience of mini pigs will be along soon.

No sorry, I can't advise you on that; you seem to have already tried everything possible.

More offers of mushed pellets from a teaspoon maybe? and some extra water on a teaspoon?
I know Debbie uses metatone, would this be safe for a little newborn?
Sending heaps of mini kisses from the girls and lots of gentle encouraging loves from me xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Sorry to hear she's not putting on weight. Has she grown (i.e in length?) but not put on weight or has she not grown? Is she smaller than the others?

It's very unusual for them not to gain any weight at all in that amount of time, especially if she's getting supplementary feeding from you. If she's hungry that's a good sign but it sounds like she might not be getting the goodness from the food for some reason. They sometimes lose a few grammes in the first few days though - did she lose some then re-gain?

If she's lively and doesn't look 'boney' around the hips I wouldn't be too worried, especially if she's eating - some do grow faster than others and if she's bright and running round then that's all good!

Hi Sophie, nice to have you back.
No, she hasn't grown in length, she still looks like a stumpy little newborn.
Her weight has been constant since birth.
She doesn't have that underfed, thin look about her, where the tummy/hips go inwards, she is a little mini bundle. Confusing. xx

Some pictures of Nina here so you can see what I mean, she still has that scruffy just born look too, bless her:

Is there any possibility that the parents were related?

Oh yes, anything is possible, the mum was part of a large haul Sokel rescue did with the RSPCA. Mum had 7 bubs. 4 still born, 1 died a day later, and Nina is one of the remaining ones. Nugget the other is fine. I did wonder could it just be something genetic? xx

That's what I was thinking, if it is then there is little you can do. Some years ago I took in a boar, he was about 3 months old, with a lack of weight problem. He died at 6 months but in those three months he lived 3 years, nothing/nobody stood in his way. He could climb out of his box, the sides were 12 inches/30cm tall. If he wanted to go into a room he would stand tall on his hind legs and try to push it open with his front paws!
As usual none of the above helps your problem but it may provide some light relief.

Thanks, I think I just might have to let this little fella live his life out here with me for however long or short that is. See how he is at 3 weeks if he survives, when he comes away from mum. Thanks. x

You can never tell what will happen, he will either have a short, action-packed life or else outlive all of his litter mates.

When Junior was born he didn't grow at all until he reached 4 weeks. Whilst his sisters were all healthy, heavy ladies, little Junior was the size of a hamster. And the weirdest thing is that he was exactly the same shape and size as your little Nina. If she is eating, drinking and active, there is nothing you can do. Possibly try adding some porridge oats to the dry food, or sprinkling bran onto it also. What about offering beetroot, helps to gain weight? Junior is now over a year old and enormous. Fingers crossed she's going to be fine :)

Thanks for that, will try the beetroot and oats. xx

My little one, out of the blue, has put 12g on today. She has been tucking in all day again. Also left a dish of mushy pellets overnight, and kept a dish of white bread soaked in goats milk in there today (kept renewing of course) and she has kept going back to that. She seems to take ages though to eat the smallest piece. I know she is very tiny herself, but could there be a tooth problem at this age, and how on earth would I tell, she is so tiny and wriggly. x
(She also ate an oat!)

Bless her - she's trying hard to gain weight isn't she?

I don't know anything about teeth sorry but just wanted to say I hope she keeps getting bigger and bigger.

She could have a dental problem, however, there is nothing you can do about it.
Occasionally, some or all of the incisors may be missing, the pig does not realise this and usually manages quite well, even if eating takes longer than average.

Hi, I have no advice to offer but had to say your little piggy is adorable, what a little sweetie. Glad she has put on a little weight and am keeping everything crossed that she goes from strength to strength. Good luck.

Joy xx

See Grandma Nutmeg...she gained weight cuz you were talking about her not gaining. Keep it up....she's trying to prove you wrong! lol All kidding aside, i do hope she continues to grow!
