Hello everyone! This is my first post. I have had my guinea pig, Ronnie, for about 4 months now and just picked up a friend for him a little over a week ago. His name is Ozzy and he is currently about 4/5 weeks old and being quarantined before moving in with the other. Just yesterday I noticed a little spot above his right eye that isn't on his left and was just wandering if anyone knows if it is a cause for concern. He doesn't seem irritated by it and is eating and drinking perfectly normally. Thanks in advance!

I'd pop him to the vet just to check to see if it's something fungal going on. When I get a new pig I tend to take them for a general check up at the vet anyway, just to make sure all is okay and that means they're already registered if I ever need to dash there with an emergency.

If I were you I would take both piggies to the vet; Ozzy would have his eye checked and Ronnie would have his teeth checked, so that you can see if his diet is correct, if he needs chewing more fibres and so on.
One month after the adoption I had to take my Osvaldo to the vet for an abscess at the scrotum; the abscess was nothing serious, but a general check up showed his premolars a bit elongated. Nothing bad, because the vet caught the situation in time and now I am strictly following his advices which should fix the situation in few months.
For this reason I would go to an excellent and cavy savvy vet this time with Ronnie and Ozzy. The cost is almost the same, but the visit would be accurate. You would come home with a lot of good advices for the future. If you are located in UK have a glance at the list of vets.
And welcome to this forum!:wel:I hope you will remain here also for some general chat:D

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Ozzy is just so adorable.
Would love to see pics of Ronnie too.
I agree with the others - get s vet to check the eye and it is always a good idea to get new piggies given a health check when you register them.

Alright everyone, thanks for all your help! I called my get and set up an appointment for this tuesday! Just to assure you all that I am no guinea abuser, I did bring my first one to the vet within a month of getting him. I just hadn't found the time to take Ozzy until now :)

Hope all goes well on Tuesday.
Let us know what happens.
Don’t worry no-one thinks you abuse your piggies.
You wouldn’t be asking questions or looking for help on this forum if you were.
We all have busy lives as well as trying to give our piggies the very best possible lives.

So my appointment for Ozzy is tomorrow at 3:30 in the afternoon, but I got some better shots of his "bad" eye vs his good one and was wondering if anyone here has had this in one of their pigs before do that they can tell me what I should expect to do to take care of it. Naturally, I am very concerned for my little guy and want to see both his cute little eyes open as wide as can be again soon.

Hi! Please take both piggies and have your boy checked for ringworm, the most aggressive and transmittable fungal infection, which can also be caught by humans and other pet species. The period between infection and outbreak is 10-14 days; ringworm spores can stay active for up to 18 months. You do not need to separate your piggies as infection has most likely already happened, but you need to also treat the companion to prevent an outbreak.

Good hygiene and a vet strength antifungal disinfectant are paramount; ideally a disinfectant that also kills ringworm spores! Please take the time to read our guide. The tips in there have been learned the hard way; that is why they work! Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

if you have your guinea pig seen and diagnosed by a vet within 2 weeks after sale, you can reclaim your vet cost from the shop by presenting the vet bill together with the sales receipt since exposure and infection must have happened at the shop. Ringworm is unfortunately very common in shop and breeder piggies as it is not easy to get on top of without very careful hygiene.

All the best!

PS: I have merged your two threads on the same issue so we have got the full information and timeline together.

:wel: to forum! I would take him to the vet to get it checked out!

Alright everyone, I took him to the vet and have been informed that it is probably ringworm. I have a cream to apply 2x a day, so hopefully that will clear him right up! I have more than enough to treat my other pig as well, so no worries there.

Great hope he gets well when my pigs got ringworm I had to syringe feed them medicine it was torture for me and the piggies

So as I'm sure a few of you are aware, my baby pig, Ozzy, has an eye fungus as the vet called it. We're treating it as ringworm as of yesterday. The picture of him eating lettuce is a few days ago and the one at his water is right now. It looks like it's even worse! I have a topical treatment for it called EnteDerm that was perscribed to him but I don't even know if I am applying it right. I put it on a q tip and try to get it on his eyelid, but he always shakes his head when I get close. The most I have been able to accomplish is a dab or two. Is there a better method of application? One tiny dab can't be that helpful.

I would recommend to hold him and give him veggies and try to cover the whole area just be careful with the eye

That's the problem. I do try and distract him, but he shakes his head every single time consistently, no matter how distracted he is. There's no way I can cover the whole area like this. I can't even dab it more than once

You could also try to get someone to help you maybe if you try to seat down and hold him tight agianst stomach and the other people could apply it. I tried that with my piggies since both had mites and that worked for me

I had a guinea pig who had a similar fungal patch to this - it took weeks to clear up . So, please don't get disheartened - and please continue with the treatment.

I must admit - because my guinea's fungal patch was so close to his eye , the vet and I both agreed it'd be better for mine to have an oral treatment ( we call it Intrafungol in the UK ).

This is also today. I am so scared for him.

Have you got somebody else who can hold your guinea pig? It is not easy to treat right next to eye. You may also find that that creaming alone may not be enough.
Otherwise use some of our piggy whispering tips to assert your authority (as well as show your love) to tell your piggy to behave in piggy style. Understanding Prey Animal Instincts, Guinea Pig Whispering And Cuddling Tips

Vets in this country have made good experiences with a systemic oral solution that contains the active ingredient itraconazole (UK brand name: itrafungol, which is licensed for cats) in the last about 7-8 years. It is now more and more frequently used by vets with access to a small animal specialist. Itrafungol is not licensed and prescription only, so your vet needs to be willing to order and prescribe it for you. It is much more effective because it get everywhere and does not make the eye swell up - and it is much more easy to medicate once daily than put cream on an uncooperative piggy three times daily.

Please be aware that ringworm is highly infective and that you can catch it, too. It is VERY important that you get hold of a good anti-fungal disinfectant; normal disinfectants are only anti-bacterial. It is also ABSOLUTELY vital that you practise good hygiene and handle a ringworm piggy only with disposible plastic gloves and that you wash your hands and arms thoroughly afterwards as well as wash any clothes in contact at a high temperature

At some point you will have to give Ozzy AND his companion one or two fungal baths to a) prevent Ozzy's companion coming down with ringworm as well and to prevent Ozzy from getting more ringworm patches, and b) at the end of the treatment to remove any ringworm spores from the coats to prevent a re-infection. Please note that ringworm always gets worse before it gets better as it runs its course, but it is treatable.

PLEASE take the time to read our ringworm guide. It contains pictures of how ringworm develops (including from a guinea pig with ringworm next to the eye), so you'll know what to expect. It also tells you exactly what you need to do in terms of hygiene to get rid of the fungus once and forever and not infect yourself.
Our very helpful and detailed ringworm guide: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

I would also strongly to get hold of some nizoral shampoo from the pharmacy and to use it for washing your whole body with it to prevent yourself from coming down with ringworm. You can also use the nizoral for your guinea pig baths. It is very harsh on the skin if you do a full course with baths every three days, but it is OK for just one or two baths.
Please bathe your guinea pigs in a bowl on the floor of your shower or your bathtub (sat on a towel for grip) to prevent them from injuring themselves badly in case they freak and blind jump and to make sure that they cannot run off.

So for an update, here is his eye since starting treatment Tuesday. He is starting to scratch until it bleeds! I do notice he is starting to open his eye a little wider each day though, so that's good. Will his due grow back after treatment ends?

Only just caught up with this thread! Poor piggy and poor you! Hope he gets better soon!

I really feel he should be on oral treatment - I really don't feel you can get topical treatment effectively on that area - it's so close to his eye

Just seen this thread.
Poor piggy.
It must be so stressful for you too.
Holding you in my thoughts.

Here is yet another update. Why isn't his eye opening? I think it's actually closed more! Poor little guy. How would I know if this two times a day topical is working? Its been a week since I started with it.

Hi, one of my foster boy (old piggy) had small patch by his eye. We've opted for DTM (pluck test) and started with itrafungol oral treatment. I didn't separate him from his cage mate as it would be too stressful as he's quite fragile, instead treated his mate, too. Pluck test came back negative so we've just finished course of treatment. If it were positive I would be more paranoid and also do baths and extra cleaning etc...
I've used F10 as disinfection during treatment and now continued using it as prevention, just difficult dilution.

Your baby boy would benefit from oral treatment, too. It's more effective and I believe it's easier to administer as you don't need to worry about his eye.
