Huge thanks for all replaying to the topics in this forum.
I’ve been reading a lot for the last few days as we’re getting two baby girls and wanted to know as much as possible about them.
We’re still at the stage of finding the right pair.

But my question is – what should I ask the breeder about?
Is there anything that the babies should be treated for before we can collect?
As we’re getting girls – how young they can get pregnant? We don’t want to end up with a small nursery soon after they are brought in.

Any help is appreciated.

being a rescue friendly forum we would recomend going to a rescue and re-homing them not buying from a breeder.

Hi and welcome!

Please be aware that we are a rescue friendly forum and that it is against the forum rules to point you towards a breeder. A good guinea pig rescue is the best place to get guaranteed healthy (i.e. fully quarantined and vet checked), properly bonded and not pregnant piggies. However, we are aware that going rescue is not equally as easy in all parts of the world. Where are you located?

Any sow can get pregnant from 4 weeks onwards and should not have been in contact with a boar over 3 weeks old (24 days is the earliest documented case of a sibling pregnancy); by six weeks old (which is often the time breeders separate), virtually all boars and sows are already sexually mature and a pregnancy is a good possibility.
Here are the vital statistics from the best medical website for guinea pigs:
http://www.guinealynx.info/reproduction.html

Ideally, young guinea pigs should not be rehomed before they are 400g/6 weeks old, so they are more likely to cope well with the stress of having their lives upturned and are less likely to fall ill and go downhill very quickly. There are no vaccinations for guinea pigs.

Gosh – I’m really sorry. I didn’t realize this forum is a rescue friendly only.
I’ve been reading lots about the care and health etc but didn’t realize that.

And I must say – it’s actually a really good idea to adopt. Can anyone can recommend a rescue centre North Surrey, Berkshire border? South West London?

Thank you!

I am sure that amongst the rescues listed by Suzy you will find the piggies that are for you! They are all from our Piggy Bank rescue support network list of (vetted) recommendable rescues.

By rehoming from a good rescue, you can even consider boars, as all boar pairs from these rescues have been carefully bonded, taking their character compatibility into account - the key for a stable boar bond that breeders or shops will/can not provide. Boars are as a rule more cuddly than girls. These rescues will also provide support and advice during the settling in time and throughout the life of their piggies.

I can vouch for rescuing! I had my first set of guineas from an animal park breeder and they came with issues.

The resues Suzy posted come very highly reccomended, can guarantee any girly pig you pick won't be pregnant, they will be healthy, happy and come with all the support you need. That's more than you would get from any pet shop or breeder, plus you get to feel great about giving them a new start in life!

I hope you find the piggies for you. x

I rehomed a pair of rescue piggies a month ago :) such a fab idea to rehome piggies in need of their forever home. My boys have settled in really well! All the best in finding your new piggies!
