Sandypig

Hello,

My cousin is getting her first Guniea Pig on Saturday but they have decided to get two. I have been helping them with what they need and they have nearly got everything but I just wondered if they get two what are better Sisters or Brothers?
I had boys to begin with and have found that Sandy is different, they both used to 'squeak'! even when they were on there own but Sandy dosen't? Anyway what would you advise as she wants to handle them alot and is very excited but I wondered which are best. Also could anyone tell if they have missed anything?

Hutch (It has two levels?),
Sawdust,
Hay,
Straw,
Bottle,
Food.

They will be getting a bowl, do they need two? And a brush and what could they get to help with their teeth? Could anyone recommend any toys please? They were unsure as they don't have any grass but the pet shop didn't say anything but I'm not sure?

Thanks :)):)), Sorry for the questions!

Straw is a no no its too sharp and can poke them in the eyes.

Veg lots of veg LOL

As for toys it depends on the guinea pig, mine like the balls you hang with hey in but thats about it LOL

Any root vegetables that are suitable for piggies can keep their teeth in check, some piggies also like chewing so willow balls/sticks and chubes or toilet roll tubes (with a slit cut down the side in case they get stuck!).

I've only ever had boys and have so far had no major problems. I don't think it makes a difference as to what sex they are as to how tame they'll be - each piggy has his or her own personality. I've got Garry and Dave who will sit for hours with you, but on the other hand Minty and Ben who would rather you left them alone...most of the time!

Do you have a hayrack? Just that my piggies are fussy and won't eat hay from the floor...

Toys...well, as well as chubes/tubes etc., they quite like paper bags...they can eat them, chew them, throw them around...mentalists!

See how they get on regarding bowls, bottles etc. I know people have two bowls so that piggies won't fall out, but sometimes they can be OK with just one of everything. Also takes up less of their space!:)

Hi Sandypig and welcome to the forum.

It is a very exciting time when you are thinking and preparing for new animals and you and your cousin have obviously given it a great deal of thought.

As Flurryfriends said above, straw is a definite no ... it is very hard and the sharp ends can injure a guinea pigs eyes. Also sawdust is not recommended as it is very dusty which could affect their breathing and get in their eyes. I use woodshaving which I know lots of members on here don't and I am in the process of changing over to vetbed or just using newspaper.

Always line the hutch with newspaper as it is absorbent and keeps them warm.
Plenty of fresh, soft, dust free hay and fresh water is a must.
Veg and fruit ... well, I could go on forever listing them so perhaps you could have a look in the Food thread.
Be careful what you pick and collect from fields though as some plants are very poisonous to piggies. Lots of lush grass will always been appreciated, but it must not be contaminated by dog mess or car exhaust fumes. And if the piggies are babies, go steady on the grass to begin with as it can upset their little tummies!

Hope that helps.
Post some photos of the new piggies when you or your cousin can and just enjoy! :):)

Thank You for your replies, they are very helpful :)):))
Do you know where I could get the woodshavings from, a pet shop? I haven't seen them before.

you could go to a pet shop, or go to a general store or supermarket! it's the same colour as sawdust, but bigger particals! x

CONGRATS!! Hope they are well!

Just a thought - depending on where the pigs are coming from - at least if they get a pair of boars, they can't have unexpected babies! :))

Hope it all goes well, look forward to seeing pics
