I am slightly neurotic about the cleanliness of the cage. I put three-four layers of grocery flyers on top of the coroplast, then polar fleece directly on top. The polar fleece is thicker than regular fleece, so I don't use towels for cushion or absorption. The cage gets swept of poos daily (sometimes twice) and I change out the papers and the fleece every third-fourth day. I have a litter pan with aspen shavings in it for my girls and they do most of their pees in there, and that is also emptied and rinsed daily. I am going to try the same trick with my boar, who pees twice as much as my girls combined and always in the same corner. His fleece I change every other day! *phew*
Some people vacuum the poos, and some just shake them out. I use a small broom and dustpan which I have become quite adept with. When I take the fleece out, I bundle it up, take it down to the laundry room and try to shake out as much debris as possible into my set tub (plug in and empty) then scoop that out before I launder them. I figure that way I am not clogging up my machine. Also, I do two rinse cycles and in between I use my hand and run it along the drum of the washer to get more furs out.
Wow. That's a lot of work, now that I've listed it all out lol! And totally worth it to have happy and healthy piggies!
