Junior Guinea Pig
To cut a long story short, my partner and their Dad have very kindly started assembling me a new guinea pig cage. It's to be two tiered - one level for each pair of pigs I currently have with a floor space of around 2x8 on each floor. I made sure the dimensions and such were good before they started but left the rest of the planning up to my partner as I've been struggling recently. It didn't even occur to me that they wouldn't do research on the best woods to use.
Now they've assembled some of the cage from pine (the frame and the pillars) and the rest from plywood. The only 'exposed' pine is from the roof sections (the bottom of each floor). So the pigs won't be able to chew on it. I am lining the base with coroplast so they also shouldn't be able to chew on the plywood either. Most of what is accessible to them will be the mesh on the front and sides and the coroplast.
I've also been assured it's non-treated & kiln-dried pine so hopefully shouldn't be causing any respiratory issues. Is this safe enough for them? I'm very concerned but also the whole point of building this was to make a more secure cage than their current C&C just in case our cat ever got in their room (I'm super careful about always closing and locking their door but human error exists). The cage is also indoors so no worries about weather degradation or anything.
I'm looking for either reassurance that this cage is okay for the pigs or a warning that it's not before I think about moving them into it. Thanks!
