So, I'm going to try fleece out & have been reading some very helpful threads on here but I'm slightly confused.

I want to use fleece, towels & newspaper to cut costs & I have these available now, so I wont have to wait.

So do I put newspaper on the bottom, then a towel, then the fleece or do I put the newspaper under the fleece, then the towel goes on the bottom?

Any help would be great

Karen x

towel is more absorbent than newspapers so should be put next to fleece then newspaper at the bottom.

In the order you place them in: first newspaper at the bottom (I use more in the sleeping and toilet areas where there is more pee, then towels (1 -3 layers, best a bit thicker in the sleeping areas), then fleece on top. You can either fold it under or peg it to the rim or, if you have a conventional cage, trap it between the bottom tray and the wire top, so your piggies can't wiggle underneath.

Make sure that you have prewashed the fleece 2-3 times (always without softeners), so any pee wicks away. You will have to do a daily spot clean as there is a LOT of poo from healthy piggies!

Lovely, thanks for the info!

The fleece is on its 3rd wash in the washing machine now, so nearly ready, I eventually want to sew the fleece to the towels but Ill see how I get on first

Thanks again

Hi Karen,

I use towels and fleece but not any newspaper. I layer two thick towels first, then one layer of fleece and it works really well:))

I spot clean twice a day using a cat litter scoop and this works really well at scooping any poops off the top of the fleece as it glides:))

I wash the towels/fleece in non bio washing liquid at 40 degrees

I am really intrigued by the idea of using fleece instead of "traditional" bedding materials. When I spot clean every morning, I end up throwing out a considerable amount of bedding material.

I understand from reading these threads how to set up the fleece -- newspaper, towels, fleece. And I understand that I can spot clean using a cat litter scoop. (I have one.) How frequently should I do a thorough cleaning, removing newspapers, towels and fleece and replacing them with clean ones?

Also, is one layer of fleece sufficient?

It depends on the number and cleanliness of your piggies, most people change them a couple of times a week if not more.

Most people sweep poo's once or twice a day, but it really depends on how many pigs and size of cage i have a very large cage for 5 pigs so i can get leave it two/3 days, i also use fleece sewn to mattress topper's they absorb the pee and dry so it don't smell which means i can change fleece once every 5 days to a week with towels it will smell aafter two days.

I use the washable absorbent bed pads and find that i can leave them down for 7 days and change the fleece when needed, but as i have only two boys and a hayloft they tend to wee in the hayloft, so most of the time the fleece will stay clean for 7 days too and then i just clean the hayloft every 2/3 days. (My c&c cage is a 4x2, with a 4 grid halyloft in a L shape)

I only converted to fleece this year and i love it! Much better than traditional bedding. :)

Yeah me too i love it here, I was on another one and they just moan about everything so i never asked questions, here i can ask anything and everyone tries to help and no one judges, its a great forum to be a member of:)

4piggiepigs, it is amazing to me how forums can have different cultures. I have experienced the same thing on other boards (for other topics).

Your avatar fascinates me. Your piggies get to play outside?

Well not in the winter no lol, but yes in spring/summer they are allowed in a guinea pig run for as long as its nice but not too hot. they eat the grass i sit with them as cats and birds can kill them so i watch them the whole time
