John Locke

Well after seeing an advert in a local pet shop, we drove out to a small farm tonight and picked up two new brothers for Bowie :D One is very fluffy and multicoloured, called Wyndham, and one is white and grey (he looks like a rat bless him!) called Orwell. They are currently in our smaller cage which we have put next to Bowie's huge one - he keeps peering in and trying to see what's in there, but they are hiding in their box. I hope they will get on! We might let them out on the floor together later on tonight and let them get to know each other a little. Fingers crossed :)

Good luck and welcome to Wyndham & Orwell.

Just one thing have you had them vet checked that there's no probs? Don't want to upset you but i was under the impression you had to
wait when introducing new piggies to each other in case of 'bugs' they may have.

Just my pennies worth. Hope all goes well and again congrats on the new piggies i do hope Bowie loves his new brothers that was a lovely thing for you to do. :) :)

Introducing boars can sometimes be a slow process - it took 3 weeks before we felt confident enough to leave our 2 in together full time. Have you looked at the Barmy 4 Boars website? It has lots of really useful advice.
We started our two off as you have done, getting to know each other though the bars, then tried them on a lap together. They were a bit tense the first time, but we had them out together on a lap for an hour every evening until they were snuggling down together happily - then we tried the introduction on neutral territory.

Ours were both adults - I have read that younger boars will usually accept each other more quickly.

But if they do seem to hate each other at first, don't give up, just try going more slowly and trying the lap thing first.

You will almost certainly get some dominance behaviour like mounting or nose-to-nose face-offs, but that's OK. If they start chattering their teeth, 'yawning' and getting up on their hind legs, be ready to separate - this is often the beginning of a fight!

Good luck! ;)

Yes the Barmy 4 Boars website is really good. I followed their advice getting my 3 boars together.

Well we let them run on the floor together closely supervised, though there is a lot of rumbling between Bowie and Orwell. There haven't been any out and out fisticuffs yet though :p

Pictures to follow :)

I'd love to hear how you get on with your new boys, we have a similar situation but in reverse (1 bonded boys, 1 new young lad, I did a thread in the behaviour board). I hope it all goes okay for you :)

Congratulations, they sound great! Good luck with the rat-looking one- all stories I've heard about ones that look like rats are either "so EVIL!" or "the absolute SWEETEST piggie ever!" :P
