My two new female 6 week old guinea pigs have been settling in well. But a few days ago I noticed one of them had developed a slight scabby bald patch under her eye and the day after it got worse. So I was checking it out and noticed she had a few scabs/flaky skin around her ears too. Then I saw white dots around her ears and I sectioned parts of her fur apart and saw crawling lice in her fur! I then checked the other one and she has them too! what do I do?

Thanks in advance

Ideally she needs to see a vet who could prescribe appropriate treatment, especially as they are so young. Treatment will likely be bathing and I would usually recommend Lyclear but they are too young for that. The other option is to clip off the infected hair. You will also need to throw any bedding or hay away.

Hi everyone,

Just took Honey and Mae to the vets and she has given me Zeno 50 mini spot on which I have to apply every 2 weeks for 1 month.

Has anyone had any luck with this and does it clear up bald scabby patches?

Also, I'm thinking of buying the shampoo from gorgeous guineas for the future as I got charged a lot at the vets as you can imagine!

Thanks again for all of your help!

It depends what the scabby patches are, if they are from the lice then maybe but if it is fungal then a whole different treatment plan will be needed. Please could you post photos?

These are the two points on Honey where there are hard scabs which appeared very quickly over the last few days. Her furs gone all spiky from where the nurse has put the spot on on her.

That looks more fungal to me, the lice you found are likely to be unrelated. Did the vet mention fungal or ringworm at all?

Nope not at all, all she said was that it may just be from the lice and that she has much more sensitive skin than Mae (my other guinea pig).

Thank you! I just hope she's not in pain at all and that the spot on treatment is effective. But seeing as I've only had them 6 days they've settled in well and are eating well which is always a good sign!
