Hi there!

I was just wanting to ask a question, but feel free to move this if this topic is in the wrong place, I got a little confused on where to place this.

I just wanted to ask, Thursday night I have got a new guinea pig, he is 5 months old and is named Stan, I adopted him from Petsathome. But could I ask, he's been letting me pick him up, but he shivers like mad when I do, so I place him back into his cage and he kicks sawdust at me haha. But I was wondering is this normal for him? He currently weighs at 800g and also he isn't eating or drinking, well last night he ate all his veg and fruit I gave him, and touched some pellets. He won't eat in the day unless I pick him up and feed him the cucumber for example. He won't come out he just hides under his little area in his cage. But he stays there all day until I either get him out. He has started making dominance sounds and finally is making other normal guinea pig sounds. Sorry for this! I was just a little concerned that he's not really drinking or eating. I get it can take a few days. Thank you! :3

HI and welcome to the forum.
Firstly, a single piggy can be quite scared, so hopefully you plan on bonding little Stan with a friend.
The shivering is a normal reaction so don't worry about that, Stan is either enjoying the stroking and attention he's getting or is still a little scared.

800g - well as a male he's not bad, I would recommend you keep weighing him weekly to ensure he is putting weight on. If you are concerned he's not drinking then put a bowl of water in his cage and ensure his veg is watery like cucumber. Eventually when he's got used to you he'll be out in his cage properly. Don't forget taking on a piggy you never know what he's been through before.

Honestly, I would love too bond him with another, but when I adopted him from the place, they told me the reason he was up for adoption and not for sale like the others is because when he was younger some other guinea pigs attacked him, so know he is territorial and they don't know how he would react to being around other Cavys, but if I did want to do it, then I would have to introduce them very slowly because they wouldn't reccomend it because of how he has been treated in the past, I am hopefully going to be weighing him every week. But thank you so much for your comment! c:

Okay, this is a standard response from pet shops, they tell you that the reason they are single is because he/she was a problem pig and wouldn't bond with another....Captain Jack my avatar was the same - utter rubbish! Jack was neutered and then bonded with a female piggy and he is adorable. I've been told the same with other pigs and it's rubbish. Yes their are some pigs that really very difficult to bond however, like my Mowgli who was very difficult to bond with finally found his female friends and has got used to females but won't bond with males. He is proper mixed up in his head but is very much better these days. I would recommend trying yourself using all the techniques which you can find on the forum.

Good job on the weighing.
