Hi, I've had my new guinea pig Charlie for about 4 days now and I've noticed that it sneezes and it wipes its nose. I also noticed a "booger" like thing on its nose. Should I be worried about this? Thanks for the help!:))

Hello and welcome to the forum. I cant help with Charlie's problem but hope someone else will be along soon. Might be best for the vet to give Charlie a check over.

Hope Charlie will be okay. Does he/she have a friend ?

Hi and welcome to you and your piggie Charlie to the forum :)
Guinea pigs loves to clean themselves and sometimes when they do this they do sort of snort/sniff.........but when you say something off his nose.......that to me means i'd get him checked out........
If you tell us what area you're in whee maybe able to suggest a cavy savvy vet for you :)
Best of luck with little Charlie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hope you enjoy a look around the forum also, and you put up some pigtures of your Charlie drool

Glynis, Velvet and Onyx x

It sounds like he has a cold. I would get it checked out by a vet as guinea pigs can rapidly become more ill.

Thanks for all the help guys. No, Charlie does not have a friend :[

I live in Burbank,California.. if that provides any help at all
The latest I could go to a vet is Friday. Hopefully it's health doesnt deteriorate that much... Thanks again guys :)

It could be a resporitory (sp?) infection so i would get it checked out by a vet asap to get the correct treatment, they can go downhill quickly. Hope it will be ok. Are you unsure of the sex of charlie? if you post a pic we can confirm this for you.

It's a male

Guinea pigs sneezing is fairly normal as long as it isn't very frequent/continuous. However, if there is discharge from the nose, this would suggest a URI (Upper-respiratory tract infection) kind of like a chest infection. They are almost always bacterial (piggies don't usually get viral infections) and can be cleared up with an anti-biotic but you will need to see your vet right away. If untreated, URIs can deteriorate very quickly and can often be fatal.

Fingers crossed and I hope this helps

I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow. So far he seems normal.. running around the cage ;). Hopefully he'll be ok :D
Oh and random question, but do guinea pigs sleep with their eyes closed? cause mine does...

UPDATE: I'll be seeing the vet tomorrow. Hopefully all goes well for Charlie!
fingers crossed :x

One of my guinea pigs sleep with her eyes closed. It is always out of comfort I think. Hopefully he is good

Good news! Charlie doesnt have a URI!
The vet said he is probably allergic to the bedding and if he does have a URI, its very mild. He gave me some antibiotics just in case though.
:)):)):))
Could you guys recommend some bedding please?
