New Guinea Pig Snuffly

Hi, we've just got 4 guinea pigs that have all been together but are now in two separate indoor cages in twos. We got them last Thursday. One has been a little sneezy and today it sounds a little ruckly (if you know what I mean) when breathing although it's not labouring at all, seems happy and feeding ok. Nose looks ever so slightly crusty. Any advice? The others are all fine. I'm new to the forum too so Hi :o)
 
Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you need to get him to the vets for a check over, it could be allergy related but then it could also be an upper respiratory infection which would need treating ASAP.
 
I agree with Helen. URI (respiratory infection) is a very common, highly infectious disease in new shop piggies, so it needs to be checked out and eliminated by a vet. Left untreated, it can kill. If you are from the UK, we have a piggy savvy vet locator on the top bar. Please have all your piggies given a medical MOT and gender check.

Thanks for your replies. Will sort vet health check for them all tomorrow. I've had piggies in the past and remember one always being snuffly but never had the ruckly sound. Have added my location, sorry didn't realise! Told they're all girls :o)

We have members from all the world, so you can imagine that our advice can differ quite a bit depending on the country/access to good vets or rescues/medication or food brands etc. Knowing roughly where you are located saves everybody time and misunderstandings, especially in an emergency.

You can find lots of advice at the top of each of our care sections. Things have moved on a lot in the last few years.
 
I agree a vet check is best sounds like the start of a URI. I have an allergy piggy he snuffles and sneezes but never ruttles which is the usual giveaway with URI's. If caught early easy to treat :) Hello and welcome by the way :)

I'm off to the vet tomorrow with Pansy as she has the same thing. Sounds like she's got a blocked up nose.
 
It can be just hay dust, but you want to make sure that you are not dealing with a URI! All the best!
 
Just to let you know it's just upper respiratory and not on her chest at all, course of antibiotics and I'm to just ring if any of others get it and she'll give me antibiotics for them too. So just keeping close eye on them all. Thanks for your advice guys x

That's good to hear. Pansy has also been given antibiotics.
 
Do you know what antibitoics you have been given? did the vet mention probiotics at all? If it is Baytril it can be quite harsh on the gut so probiotics are definitely needed. Examples are Bio Lapis or Avipro Plus from Vet UK or Pro C from Pets at Home. These should be given at least an hour apart from antibiotics. Please don't put them in their water as it ruins the quality of the probiotic.
 
Yes have been given Baytril for mine, I have the Pro C already but have been putting in their water as was told to by the member of staff there and the instructions tell you to? How else would you give it then? Is it just being in the water over time that isn't good? So mix it with a bit of water and give it to them by syringe straight away? They're on the nuggets food wise so can't really add it to that?

I would give it in a syringe as it insures that the guinea pig has the correct amount
 
Yes by syringe. If you put it in the water you can't guarantee a) they have it and b) that it is an hour apart from the antibiotics.
 
How much probiotic do you give to your piggys does anyone know? I have had the same problem and giving antibiotics and I'm not sure the vet may have told me how much but there was so much yo remember I forgot. I mixed up a whole sachet with the amount of water it says and fed them as much as they would take but coconut was beginning to get agitated with it they probably had half the sachet between them?
