I'm getting a new guinea pig and I was hoping I could get some tips from this forum. Maybe you could reply with a guinea pig checklist or notes on of to take take care of them.

don't take too much... because then your piggie will suggest you what he needs... they love recycled simple stuff; for example a box can be their preferred hidey.
About the food, pellets are not their main food (I use pellets only as a treat) and it is recommended to avoid the ones with cereals/flours/sugars. Read carefully the label (online there is a greater choice) and don't follow the suggestion of the firm, the dose of pellet is very limited (one spoon a day, even less) otherwise the piggie becomes fat and kidneys/bladder develop some disease. Consider that if a piggie eats pellets, don't eat hay/grass and that is very bad... Hay is their main food for living with a healthy gut :) (and we can save lots of money with the vet if they don't develop diseases).
Another advice is: start to look now for a very good vet specialised in guinea pigs, so that when you need him you will know which doctor to call.
