I got a guinea pig the other day, and he very scared when I come by his cage, he runs around frantically. After we walk away from his cage he stays frozen and won’t move, he only eats when nobody is home. Is this because he’s in a new home? I’m scared I won’t be able to bond with him.

Is the top of your cage covered? He will be scared as you will look like a big giant to him! Try covering half the cage where he can feel safe. Also is he alone ?

It helps if your guinea pig is on a table and of the ground. Also if you just got him then it will take time for him to settle in. (1 or 2 weeks) does he have a cage mate it would help him be a little less shy to have a buddy to rely on. Hope this helps! :P

It will take time to bond with your little piggy. When I first got my guinea pig eat at night when everyone was sleeping but now they eat in front of me all the time.

Please take a good read of our piggy whispering guide Understanding Prey Animal Instincts, Guinea Pig Whispering And Cuddling Tips

Remember that you piggies are prey animals and a big human looming over them is going to be terrifying. You can really help them by practicing the tips in the guide.

Does he have a cagemate too? Guinea pigs are herd animals and do not do well on their own. Having a cagemate would also improve his confidence
