Hello,

My son had 2 guinea pigs for his birthday in August last year and yesterday we went to clean them out and found one of them had passed away. So i have cleaned the cage out and checked the other guinea pig over and he seems his normal self, so i went to pets at home last night and bought him another mate. He seems to have taken to him, really well no signs of agression etc.
However i am a bit concerned about the condition of the new guinea pig, he is very quiet, and when i put him in his cage and he didn't try to run off he just sat there. Is this normal? as i don't remember my other guinea pigs being like that?

Have you done basic health checks? ie. are his eyes bright?

Is he eating or drinking? I admit I'm not all that knowledgable but anything you've noticed will help others on here give appropriate advice.

Hi! Your baby boy can be very traumatised and just needs time; but if I were you, I'd have him checked by a vet asap - pet shops (especially p@h) don't have the best record in terms of health problems! Illnesses like URI can spread very quickly in stressed groups, and Christmas is the time when loads of piggies are shipped into this country.

You are probably not aware of it, but there are quite a number of reputable guinea pig rescues in Britain that offer "boar dating" - letting a single/bereaved boar choose a mate of his own liking himself. They rehome only guaranteed healthy piggies and will also support you through the settling in time and afterwards.
