hi guys! Only new to the site and posted yesterday to say hello. On first time cuddles I've noticed Lottie has a sore on her back leg-it looks quite raw. I've noticed no itching because Lottie is just new but I've been listening out for any unusual sounds. Her and her sister seem to be eating and drinking fine.

I researched before buying my two new Piggies as I'm not so keen on p@h & heard awful stories. The breeder does own a pet store & has on their site "disease free" I called & explained the situation & said I have a vet appointment tomorrow afternoon & will call back with news I just don't know where I stand with them-they will not cover bet fees as stated in their info letter I got.

Definitely best consulting a vet. That little sore does look a little bit like Ringworm.

Just becareful when handling her until you get a diagnosis as ringworm can be very contagious. Although my vet said if you have had ringworm before you'll have immunity. I have had two ringworm outbreaks after my pig's moved house and never did catch it from them. Although I do still use gloves etc to avoid passing it between the other pig's.

Of course it may well not even be that but worth protecting yourself just incase. Good Luck at the vets, did you have a look at the Vet Locator to find a good guinea pig vet?

Thank you! I've had ring worm as well from a previous guinea pig. I have an appointment at my vets tomorrow, they are very good so hoping to get some cream etc for her, just a shame for her. looks sore.

Yes it does look like ringworm, but a vet is your best bet. Good luck, sending healing vibes!

I would also consider ringworm, but please get a proper vet diagnosis before starting to treat on spec!

Sadly, whether you go to a pet shop or a breeder that is breeding for money's sake, the problems tend too be all to often the same. The safest place to get guinea pigs from is in fact one of our good standard recommended rescues with a mandatory quarantine and a pregnancy watch, as well as careful bonding with respect of character compatibility. :(

If the shop claims to sell only "disease-free" animals but refuses to pay for any vet cost resulting from an infection that has happened at the shop, you can complain to your local council about trading standards. Legally, she is making claims that are false. She is also selling damaged ware and refusing liability. The law is quite strict on that. The disclaimer that you got during the sale should have had your alarm bells ringing, as the problem has obviously happened before! :(

Here are our tips on how to best deal with ringworm to prevent a return and to prevent also infecting yourself: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/
We have got a piggy savvy UK vet locator on the top bar that tries to list the best piggy vets for each region. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

As we are dealing with members from all over the world, we find it very helpful in being able to tailor any advice to what is available and possible to you (like medical brands, vet access, climate etc.) if you please added your county or at least your country to your details. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. thanks!

thank you for all the information. i feel so upset as I've found another sore patch on Lottie and a sore patch on Lola- both at their mouth area. I feel so let down as i has genuinely thought id found a proper breeder- clearly not! very angry with myself. I WILL take further action in regards to the store. I normally get my shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas- unsure if you have heard of this? i will wait until i see my vet tomorrow for a definite diagnosis. I had a previous guinea with ring worm and i contracted it too so i know all about how sore it is!

Yes, I have heard of gorgeous guineas and I do recommend some of their shampoos. However, if it is ringworm, you will need something stronger. Please be aware that by home treating before a vet visit, you can make a proper diagnosis impossible.

i have an appointment at 2.30 tomorrow afternoon at the vets.

All the best!

The good news is that with good treatment and hygiene, ringworm can be got on top of within 1-2 weeks. The medications that we are recommending are suitable for all ages and weights. As both girls are affected, you do not need to separate; that is anyway more of an issue if you are dealing with an outbreak in a group.

It is always very sad for us when we have people (and of course piggies) coming on here that are having a bad experience trying to do the right thing.

So i went to the vets today, guinea pigs are healthy and weigh 240g :) We did some test for mites which i should get the results back tomorrow. The vet however suspects ring worm so we decided to do the vets test (just because i get that back a lot quicker) and the lab test which takes 4 weeks. They will get treated for ring worm anyway, I'm waiting on the cream arriving. I phoned the breeder who initially shot me down saying there was no way the piggies could have ring worm..we then found mutual ground and he's phoning my vets tomorrow (they needed my permission in writing to let him across the files which I've done via email) Main thing is piggies tests are on going. Now for operation disinfecting! Any tips on disinfecting my clothes and self are more than welcome! :)

Good news is Ringworm is easily treated, bad news is all the cleaning.

Hopefully the breeder will give you some compensation or at least pay the vet bills.

I hope so too! i was £98 today and thats just for tests and disinfectant, I've still the treatment to pay for which will come in by Wednesday. I hope i get some compensation. Of course i know animals cost money, this was just very unexpected.

I am very sorry that you have such an expensive start! All the best!

yes that looks like ringworm, be careful not to catch it your self. Ive had it twice (caught from my pigs) and it is very itchy!

ach I'm hoping it can only get better Wiebke! i have liked your page on Facebook- your piggies are so cute! i don't know where you have space in the house for yourselves! :)

KevinandCharlie- I've had it too, from a previous guinea pig, its not nice! I'm trying to be as careful as i can. Thank you :)
