hey guys, i’ve had my guinea pig for about 3 months and the two of us have grown very close to the point she passes out on me and constantly licks me, but i’ve noticed she needs a friend. over the time period, if another guinea pig is heard she gets so excited and goes to investigate it. i read that it’s never to late to introduce another guinea pig. i recently found a baby female that i think seems so sweet, i just don’t want to do anything wrong. i know it’s supposed to be done in a neutral place so do i buy a second cage to keep them in? or do i let them meet eachother in that space and then put them in the same cage? i need advise

You need to do introductions in a neutral area where your current piggy hasn’t been. So if you have a playpen you can use that. Put in a pile of hay in the middle and let them sort themselves out for some hours.

You then need to thoroughly clean out their home and rearrange it. Then if they get along you can move them into the cage. Make sure it is a minimum of 120x60cm. Two of everything.

Make sure that the sow is indeed a sow before you bond them. And it needs doing straight away as she’s so young - their need for companionship is more important than whether or not they bring in any illnesses.

:agr:
If one or both of the piggies are under four months of age, then they must be bonded, following the correct procedure, straight away. Piggies under four months of age are too young to be kept by themselves at all, so they cannot be kept in separate cages prior to bonding.

This is the guide which explains the bonding procedure Bonding and Interaction: Illustrated social behaviours and bonding dynamics

Hello and welcome. Do have a good read of the bonding guide linked by @Piggies&buns. A completely neutral space with a big pile of hay and nowhere anyone can get stuck. When they have accepted each other then move them into a freshly cleaned cage (remove all scent from your existing piggy) and again make sure nowhere anyone can get cornered - all hideys have 2 exits.
