One of my friend have two new guineapigs they are just introduced each other for only a week. Can they mate within a week of intro? Or they just need time for mating? Any idea?
Hi
Please do not put unneutered guinea pigs of different genders together!
Guinea pigs have a very high rate of fatalities in their pregnancies, in both mums and pups. It is between one quarter and one fifth. Is your friend prepared for that? Also that guinea pigs are nonstop breeding machines that can get pregnant as soon as they are weaned (boars from 3 weeks and sows from 4 onwards) and that come into season again within hours of giving birth?
Your friend will not be able to keep her mixed gender piggies together unless she wants to kill her sow eventually in a miscarriage (including the pups) by being worn out or start a chain of indiscriminate inbreeding. Does she know about the parentage of her piggies and whether there are any bad genes floating around? They can have some very unpleasant results.
Guinea pigs live in stably bonded groups and don't handle the on-off mating relationships that breeders grant them, especially boars. Some of my most messed up and long term skittish rescue adoptes are dumped breeder piggies.
Here is the low down on pregnancy and breeding. Please be aware that we do not do discuss and support any intentional breeding on this forum in any way, as by our forum rules.
There are too many carelessly bred guinea pigs in this world that are dumped and discarded left right and centre to add to that for one's own selfish desires and a complete lack of welfare and care, or even by the sound of it, the most basic information.
