Hi all
I work at an after school kids club and they have decided to get guinea pigs, got permission from parents etc. I don't agree with it all as they will only be in contact with people/kids for 4 hours a day, also our manager hasn't thought about weekends and holidays.........Anyway we now have 2 little girl guineas, 13-18 weeks old. They are inside in a nero 3 cage. I am making sure that all members of staff plus the manager remembers to feed and check them. My manager is so forgetful and she has no idea about guineas, she was going to put sawdust in the cage without newspaper first also didn't realise that they need fresh fruit/veg each day. I feel so sorry for them as they will be alone for so long. I worry too much.

Anyways i wanted to ask that i seen a traffic light colour list of fruit and veg for guineas, but i cant find it. Can anyone help?

Also cos they are young is there anything special i need to know? I do have 2 guineas myself but i can't remember what they were like at 13-18 weeks old :).

A Nero 3 is too small for 2 Guineas :( Do they get any exercise out of the cage at all?

I think all you can hope for really, is that eventally, they realise they have taken on to much, and find them a more appropriate home. It must get quiet manic in there at times, they probobly won't be getting the excercise they need either.

Could you not try to talk them out of it?rolleyes I'm sure you already have, but it might be worth a go. If not, at least they have you to keep a watchful eye on things xx:)

Thanks, that was the right food chart i was looking for...........I have told my manager my concerns.
We have got them now, and i only work there twice a week, we have been keeping on at the children to keep the noice down and stop running an jumping near the cage, but children are children especially at an after school club.
I ask my manager what will happen at weekends and she said she comes in on Sundays......she thinks they will be fine for saturday, but guinea eat and eat. And i don't want it to come down to me to come in on Saturdays as they aren't my babies. I was wishing that the parents will be against the idea, but they have no clue.
Also i asked my manager about holidays and a parent asked too and she was like i don't know!! And suggested the children take turns looking after them. I think its wrong to let children take turns looking after them over the hols cos that will unsettle them.

But to me they seem to be settling in well, even with the noise as they have been out eating and they are getting handled very carefully everyday. But they will get bigger and out grow the cage!

Overall its a bad idea, but one against 2 and parents and kids is a no win situation and i only work there 8 hours a week. I have had probs with my manager and the other member of staff before.

You hit the nail on the head............they didn't think this thru......fancy not thinking of weekends and holidays :(:(:(
I hope you're able to convince them to get a larger cage and perhaps rehome to somebody who can care for them 24/7 as piggies love people and need lots of attention x)x)
